Statement from South Bend Common Council President Canneth Lee Regarding the Midwest Continental Divide Trail South Bend, IN — The South Bend Common Council voted to pause action on the Midwest
Continental Divide Trail to allow additional time to address stakeholder concerns.
“This project has already been paused by Representative Jake Teshka and the St. Joseph County
Commissioners,” said Council President Canneth Lee. “Our action reflects the need to carefully
consider legitimate concerns.”
Farmers, landowners, and residents have raised concerns regarding eminent domain and property
rights. The pause will allow time to revise the proposal and continue community engagement.
“A $40 million trail investment would benefit our region,” Lee said. “But it must move forward
in a way that respects property owners and builds public trust.”
The Council remains committed to working with stakeholders on a revised proposal that serves
the best interests of the community, “a Pause is not a denial”.
