Re: Recommendation for Historic Landmark Designation of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 310 W. Monroe Street,
South Bend, Indiana
Dear Ross:
On behalf of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), we respectfully submit this
letter in support of designating Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, located at 310 W. Monroe Street, South Bend,
Indiana 46601, as a Historic Landmark.
Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church represents an important chapter in the history of South Bend's African American
community. For generations, the church has served not only as a place of worship but also as a center for civic en-
gagement, education, community service, and social justice advocacy. Its enduring presence reflects the resilience,
faith, and contributions of African American residents whose efforts helped shape the cultural and social fabric of
South Bend.
Historically, African American churches have played a critical role in providing leadership, organizing community initi-
atives, supporting families, and advancing civil rights. Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to
that legacy. The congregation's commitment to spiritual development and community empowerment has made the
church a respected institution and a gathering place for meaningful dialogue and collective action.
The building itself contributes to the historical character of the surrounding neighborhood and serves as a visible re-
minder of the community's heritage. Preserving Zion Hill Church through Historic Landmark designation would help
ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the significant role that African American religious institu-
tions have played in the development of South Bend.
Historic designation would recognize not only the architectural and historical value of the structure but also the broad-
er cultural significance of the church's longstanding service to the community. Such recognition would honor the gen-
erations of congregants, pastors, and community leaders who have worked tirelessly to strengthen South Bend
through faith, service, and civic leadership.
The NAACP strongly supports the nomination of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church for Historic Landmark status and
urges the Historic Preservation Commission to approve this designation. Preserving this important institution will help
safeguard an essential part of South Bend's history and ensure that its legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Thank you for your consideration of this recommendation. We appreciate your commitment to preserving the historic
and cultural resources that enrich our community.
Respectfully submit-
Trina D. Robinson
