O?IVET
AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH
June 4, 2026
Department of Community Investment
City of South Bend
215 S. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd
South Bend, IN 46601
Dear Mr. Ross Van Overberghe,
The members of Olivet African Methodist Episcopal Church could not be more pleased that
Zion Hill Church is pursuing Historical Landmark Designation for its property at 310 W.
Monroe Street.
We are deeply grateful for the care, respect, and reverence that the Zion Hill congregation has
shown toward the rich history of this sacred site. The relationship between our congregations
has been exceptional, and we greatly appreciate Zion Hill's commitment to preserving the
legacy of this historic church.
Olivet A.M.E. Church was founded on Monroe Street in 1870. The current structure is the very
edifice that our congregation eventually outgrew before relocating in the early 1970s. Knowing
that this building continues to serve as a place of Christian worship, spiritual growth, and
community fellowship is a meaningful tribute to generations of faithful believers who
worshiped within its walls.
Pastor Derrickson and the Zion Hill congregation have embraced the responsibility of
preserving and honoring this beautiful landmark. They recognize its significance as the site of
South Bend's first African American church and understand the importance of ensuring that its
history is remembered and celebrated.
For these reasons, we wholeheartedly support Zion Hill Church's application for Historical
Landmark Designation. We are hopeful that this designation will help preserve and protect the
historical and cultural significance of this treasured site for future generations.
Thank you for your efforts and leadership in preserving the rich history of South Bend.
Blessings,
Rev Eileen Thomas, Pastor
719 N. Notre Dame Avenue • South Bend, Indiana 46617
