Home My WebLink About2026-03 Special Resolution Recognizing May as ALS Awareness Month* �l SPECIAL RESOLUTION NO. 2026-03 A SPECIAL RESOLUTION FROM SOUTH BEND COMMON COUNCIL VICE PRESIDENT SHEILA NIEZGODSKI, SIXTH DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE, RECOGNIZING MAY AS ALS AWARENESS MONTH l, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurological disease that affects the parts of the nervous system responsible for voluntary muscle movement. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive and ultimately fatal disorder; and the United States Congress designated May as National Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Awareness Month in 1992 to increase awareness and public understanding of ALS; and every ninety (90) minutes in the United States, someone is diagnosed with ALS, and another person passes away from the disease. The average age of diagnosis is fifty-five (55); and £ the average survival time after diagnosis is roughly three (3) years; however, many people live longer. Twenty percent (20%) of those diagnosed live five (5) years or more, ten percent (10%) live ten (10) years or more, and five percent (5%) live twenty (20) years or more; and with no known cure, current treatments for ALS aim to slow disease progression and help manage symptoms for those affected; and G,a ALS is a debilitating disease in need of new treatments and therapies.
