AN ORDINANCE DISIGNATING AND ESTABLISHING AN
HISTORIC LANDMARK UNDER ORDINANCE NO. 5565 -73,
AMENDING ORDINANCE N0. 49g0 -68, AS AMENDED,
COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE ZONING ORDINANCE OF THE
CITY OF SOUTH BEND
WHEREAS, a member of the Common Council of the City
of South Bend has petitioned for the designation of the following
described real estate as an Historic Landmark under Ordinance No.
5565 -73, as amended, to wit:
78 Ft. E. end Lot 81
Cushing and Lindsey
The improvements located upon said land can
be commonly described as 701 North Cottage
Grove Avenue
hereinafter referred to as the "PROPERTY."
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Commission of South
Bend and St. Joseph County has recommended the designation of the
PROPERTY as an Historic Landmark.
BE 'IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SOUTH BEND, INDIANA:
SECTION 1,
That the above described PROPERTY be, and it is hereby,
designated and established as an Historic Landmark under Ordinance
No. 5565 -73, as amended.
SECTION 2.
FILED ; CLERK'S OFFICE
That this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect
from and after its passage by the Common Council, approved by the AUG 2 8197U

This store was established in 1899 at S. Michigan. Street, and was
"The Economy ". The store was ownegbv Rarry Salinger of South Bend and Louie
Ptathan' Sal tiger of Goshen and was the "Largest store in South Bend. "The Economy"
'tent out of business 'between 1912 and 1914.
In 1910, the Gemberlings 'sold the house and lot on Cottage Grove for $5,250.c� 4
to Adam Muessel, a retired restaurr.nteur and saloon. keeper. Adam Muessel wss

had two children. Their son Richard A vtae:ssel, was vice- president and

daughter, Gretchen worked as a clerk and

Chilled Plow Works. .
Adapt acid Christianna Nhessal lived at ?cal. Cottage Grove until their deaths
in 1945. Gretchen Muessel, who never married, lived with them, and after
their deaths continued to Live in the house until she died in 1973. Accord -
ing to the assessor's office, the house is still owned by the Muessel family. ""
