AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING AND ESTABLISHING AN
HISTORIC LANDMARK UNDER ORDINANCE NO. 5565 -739
AMENDING ORDINANCE N0. 4990 -68, AS AMENDED,
COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE ZONING ORDINANCE OF THE
CITY OF SOUTH BEND
WHEREAS, a member of the Common Council of the City
of South Bend has petitioned for the designation of the following
described real estate as an Historic Landmark under Ordinance No.
5565 -73, as amended, to wit:
24 1/4 feet East side of Vail's S.W. Addition
Block 4, Lots 5,6,7,8 and 36 feet West side
of the South half of Johnson's 2 acres
Lot is 60' x 198'
Vail'.s platted March, 1837
Johnson's 2 acre platted December, 1859
The improvements located upon said land can
be commonly described as 405 West Wayne
hereinafter referred to as the "PROPERTY."
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Commission of South
Bend and St. Joseph County has recommended the designation of the
PROPERTY as an Historic Landmark,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SOUTH BEND, INDIANA:
SECTION 1.,
That the above described PROPERTY be, and it is hereby,
designated and established as an Historic Landmark under Ordinance
No. 5565 -73, as amended.

Chauncey Lawton purchased, from Orlando and Ella Palmer, portions of
Lots 5,6,7 and 8 of Block 4, Vail's Addition to South tend and an
adjoining portion of land known as "Johnson's.2 acres" in November,
1871. The Palmers had only purchased this land in July of 1871 from
Alexander Hull, a shoemaker.
Lawton was involved in various manufacturing firms and would seem to
have the wealth to build such a house that Hull did not. The Palmers
continued to ow,n the land adjacent to Lawton's on the West, which
would indicate any building they did was on that piece of land.
Lawton was an officer in a number of firms; Walworth & Lawton Manu-
facturing Co. (sash, doors, and blinds), Stone Pipe and Cement Co.,
Phoenix Flour Mills. He was associated with the latter for the longest
time. In 1889, he tempora rily left South Bend, and soon after, his
daughter and her husband, Warren and Laura Lawton Stedman, moved in.
Members of the family lived at 405 W. Wayne until Charles Noel Stedman
(the son of Warren and Laura Stedman) died in 1944. He willed it to
Julia Regner Oliver who continues to reside there
The garage was built in 1951.
