HomeMy WebLinkAbout04.13.26 Public Works UpdateAPR 1 5 2026 Bianca Tirado City Clerk, South Bend, IN LEAF PICKUP PROGRAM • Pickup resumed March 23 in Zone 7, where it was suspended last fall. • After finishing the first round in Zones 7 through 9, crews returned to Zone 1 to begin a second pass. • Crews are currently in Zone 5 and starting Zone 6 tomorrow. Over 40 lane miles will be paved. • View paving map at southbendin.gov/paving • List determined by a surface condition assessment that rates streets on a scale of Oto 100. • Dashboard can be found at southbendin.gov/streetsplan ~. , ( .11) < ll ',< >l 111 I\L\ U PUBLIC WORKS COUNCIL UPDATE IRELAND ROAD PAVEMENT PROJECT • Paving 2.8-mile stretch of Ireland Road from the western city limits (600 feet west of Burnett Drive) to Ironwood Drive. • A turn lane with a designated turn arrow will be added on Ireland Road at Fellows Street. • Currently working on curb work and driveway approaches between Miami Street and Ironwood Drive. • Once completed, paving will begin. COUNCIL UPDATE COLFAX AVENUE STREETSCAPE PROJECT • Streetscape improvements to create safer traffic patterns, including bike and pedestrian facilities on Colfax Avenue between Sycamore and Hill Street. • Improvements include: • New multi-purpose path • New traffic signals • Raised intersections at Niles Avenue and Sycamore Street • Raised crossing at the East Bank Trail • Decorative lighting and benches • New trees • Construction will be completed in three phases. t:I 1 Y Uf SUl. COLFAX AVENUE STREETSCAPE PROJECT • Final phase includes repaving Colfax Avenue from Sycamore to Eddy streets. • Construction should be complete by November, barring any weather delays or unforeseen ci rcu msta nces. • In a separate project planned for later this year, St. Joseph County plans to rebuild the Colfax Avenue bridge over the river and the Colfax Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard intersection. ~~· -~ Cl rY ()J S()l rJI gE'.'D PUBLIC WORKS COUNCIL UPDATE CURB & SIDEWALK REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM • Annual program that offers reimbursement for homeowners who repair curbs and sidewalks. • Anyone who is a homeowner or property owner, including businesses, within the city limits can participate in the program. • There are three target areas this year. • Applications are now open for the 2026 program. ~;.11,i~/ /~\. !.11'\tll'i<ll Jlll1L'.\Jl 'i ·, ·. J PUBLIC WORKS ;-__ _;", COUNCIL UPDATE SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL • Secured federal funding to reconstruct 3.25 miles of sidewalk and 60 ADA curb ramps near Muessel Elementary School and Kennedy Academy. • Construction started in April and will be completed by August. ~-Cl l) OJ SOl ll I llL\D PUBLIC WORKS COUNCIL UPDATE ALLEY GRADING • Alley grading is done area by area • City is split into 4 areas or zones: NW, NE, SW, SE. • Grading work will begin in May and continue till November. • Plan to address all alleys that need grading throughout the city. ~t)i,. l}f (1(,, ./~ \.
