NEMETH, Mayor COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601 May 9, 1979 Common Council County -City Building South Bend, Indiana 46601 Dear Council Members: AREA 219 284 - 9261 Attached hereto is an ordinance appropriating the sum of $300,000 from the Federal Revenue Sharing Grant Fund for the purpose of implementing a portion of the original design plan by the Joseph Wetzel firm for Discovery Hall Museum. The $300,000 local share, plus a grant of $179,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities, will enable us to complete by next spring 85% of the original Wetzel plan. Enclosed herein please find a copy of a letter which I received from the National Endowment for the Humanities pro- viding us with a $15,000 grant for planning toward this project. That grant is in addition to the $179,000 grant. I believe your support for this project is essential for our city in terms of the cultural and historical enrichment of our people, particularly in regard to the contributions made by the Polish and Hungarian peoples toward our industrial development. The facility is also important from the stand- point of economic development in that it aids us in recruiting firms for possible relocation to the South Bend area. Inasmuch as the Discovery Hall Museum is purely a city project within the Century Center complex, I would appreciate your wholehearted support for our efforts to make it reflect well on the City of South Bend and its citizens.
