Curb and Sidewalk Programs
• Per Chapter 18 Article 3 of the South Bend Municipal Code, the
maintenance and repair of curb and sidewalk is the responsibility of
the property owner
• Two programs are available to help:
o Curb and Sidewalk Reimbursement Program
■ Any property owner in the City is eligible for partial
reimbursement of sidewalk or curb repair
■ Funding still available for 2025
o Council Allocation Program
■ Eligible properties are low-income, poor condition, existing,
residential sidewalk or curb

Council Allocation Program
• For 2025, 14,000 linear feet of sidewalk replacement and
10,000 linear feet of curb replacement are underway
(completion by early 2026)
oApproximately 1,500 feet of sidewalk and 1,100 feet of curb
per council member
• Whenever practical, we do a full block of sidewalk and curb
rather than one property at a time to stretch our budget further
• Allocations may be donated to another council member/district

• 2026 budget is proposed to remain the same
• Council members should select approximately 1,500 feet of
sidewalk and 1,100 feet of curb or 2,000 feet of sidewalk only
°Variables like tree removal, driveways, and traffic control can
all affect the cost of a particular property
oAnything over the allocation will be considered based on
available budget
olf you do not reach your allocation, Engineering can
supplement with requests we receive from 311
