(©72 / -ea AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING AND ESTABLISHING AN HISTORIC LANDMARK UNDER ORDINANCE NO. 5565-73, AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 4990 -68, AS AMENDED, COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE ZONING ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County has petitioned for the designation of the following described real estate as an Historic Landmark under Ordinance No. 5565-73, as amended, to wit: Lot 1 &2 Ex 2' S side Vails Add Block 1 and 2' S side Lots 2 &3 Ex 1' S side Vails Add Block 1 The improvements located upon said land can be commonly described as 322 West Washington Street and 112 Franklin Place hereinafter referred to as the "PROPERTY." WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County has recommended the designation of the PROPERTY as an Historic Landmark. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA: SECTION 1. That the above described PROPERTY be, and it is hereby, designated and established as an Historic Landmark under Ordinance No. 5565-73, as amended. SECTION 2. Addition) Key Number: 1 -03- 18%10 -349 /Y historical notes William Vail's South West Addition to South Bend was platted the 23rd of larch, 1837. Lots one and two Vail Sub. changed hauls several times. On the 28th day of November, 1851, Sarah Rose purchased the property from Emily M. White for $1,000.00 Elmer and Sarah Rose (his wife) owned a large farm on South Michigan Street, but because of Mr. Rose's many business interests, they purchased this property near the center of town. The property remained in the hands of the Rose descendents from 1851 to 1967 -8 (117 years.) Elmer Rose (24 years) and Sarah Sarle (22 years) were married in the East and came to South Bend in the winter of 1837. Beside operating a large farm, Mr. Rose ran a stage line between Centerville, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois. The Rose children were all born in the farm home on South Michigan Street. When they moved to the town property in 1851, Mr. Rose soon became active in democratic politics. He was elected a County Commissioner in 1853. He also served as a director of the Agricultural Society. On the 10th of April, 1862, Elmer Rose died in his 49th year. John Rose, a son, born in 1841, died on the 31st of March, 1877. He was only 36 years old, married and had one child. At the time of his death, he was listed as a clerk in the George Wyman Co. This was a general store owned by his brother -in -law, George Wyman, and his brother, Garland Rose. Mrs. Ann Elizabeth Rose Wyman died on the 8th of May, 1880. In 1882, Garland Rose and George Wyman dissolved their partnership. Garland Rose and Frederick Ellsworth opened a general store name�Rose and Ellsworth in 1883. Mrs. Sarah Sarle Rose died on the 6th of September, 1889. She left her estate to her son, Garland, and daughter, Frances Helen. Frances Helen Rose had married Dr. George P. Morey (Doctor - Druggist) in 1881. They resided for a time in South Bend, Chicago, and New York. When Garland Rose died on the 9th of November, 1892, he had willed his share of the property to his sister and also his share in the Rose - Ellsworth store. The Moreys moved from Avon, New York to South Bend with their two young daughters, Helen Rose and Frances C14kire Morey. On the 31st of January, 1894, in the South Bend Tribune appeared a notice that Dr. and Mrs. G. P. Morey would put up a handsome residence on the Rose property. It has been written by the present owners that the large stained glass window on the stairway of the Morey house won a gold medal at the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition (continued on white sheet) source of information See white sheet for sources 322 West Washington Avenue historical notes (continued from survey card) (May 1, 1893 to October 31, 1893). Dr. Morey purchased the window for $2,800.00 and the house was designed to show off the beautiful window and another stained glass piece, entitled "Mignon" (Fr. darling) is overthe fireplace. Dr. Morey was a Civil War veteran and when the G.A.R. Encampment was held in South Bend in May of 1896, he entertained one of the past commanders in his new home. Mrs. Morey had become ill in February of 1896 and never fully recovered. She died the 30th of July, 1896 She did not live to see her new home completely furnished. On the lst of September, 1896, Frederick Ellsworth purchased the Rose -Morey interests in the store. The marriage of Miss Helen Rose Morey and William Keyes Lamport took place at 322 West Washington on the lst of July, 1908. William Lamport had come to South Bend in 1901, and was a reporter for the South Bend Tribune. In 1913, he resigned as Associate Editor of the Tribune to become a retail advertiser for the Ellsworth Store. He formed the advertising agency that became Lamport, Fox, Dolk and Pre11. Dr. Morey died the 28th of March, 1929 (age 84) at the family residence - 322 West Washington. Mr. Lamport died in 1932. In 1948, this two- storied, wood sided, shingled and cut stone house was converted into two apartments. There were five rooms on the first floor and five on the second floor. There are four fireplaces. Mrs. William Lamport died in 1963. Helen Lamport Ogle, Jean Lamport Farmer, and Richard Lamport, her heirs, sold the property to Harold Weber and his wife, Lucille, on the 11th of February, 1967, recorded 1968. The property is now being sold to Markmakers, an advertising firm. Sources of Information.
