After much deliberation, the South Bend Water Works has decided to move ahead in making improvements to the above mentioned system. That system currently is capable of pumping 750 gallons per minute with limited (2000 gals.) storage. While this may be adequate many portions of the year, it is not adequate to provide good fire pro- tection during the summer months when water usage is already high. The Board of Water Commissioners accepted bids and made an award for the proposed work, contingent on your approval of that contract, to Layne Northern, Inc. in the amount of $24,976 on August 17, 1981. It is anticipated that when completed, the system as modified will have a maximum of 1500 gals. /minute, in addition to much greater flexibility in meeting a variety of demand levels.
