JANUARY 2, 1989
Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend met in the
Council Chambers of the County -City Building on Monday, January 2, at noon. The
meeting was called to order and the Pledge to the Flag was given.
ROLL CALL Present: Council Members Luecke, Niezgodski,
Soderberg, Puzzello, Slavinskas, Zakrzewski,
Coleman, Duda, Voorde
Absent: None
Council Member Niezgodski made a motion to nominate Council Member Puzzello as
President, seconded by Council Member Coleman. Council Member Luecke made a motion
to close nominations, seconded by Council Member Niezgodski. Council Member
Puzzello was elected by acclamation.
Council Member Coleman made a motion to nominate Council Member Niezgodski as Vice
President, seconded by Council Member Puzzello. Council Member Soderberg made a
motion to nominate Council Member Slavinskas as Vice President, seconded by Council
Member Slavinskas. Council Member Coleman made a motion to close the nominations,
seconded by Council Member Luecke. Council Member Niezgodski was elected.
Council Member Zakrzewski made a motion to nominate Council Member Luecke as
Chairman of the Committee of the Whole, seconded by Council Member Duda. Council
Member Slavinskas made a motion to nominate Council Member Soderberg as Chairman of
the Committee of the whole, seconded by Council Member Soderberg. Council Member
Puzzello made a motion to close the nominations, seconded by Council Member
Zakrzewski. The motion carried. Council Member Luecke was elected.
Council Member Soderberg made a motion to retain the services of Council attorney,
Kathleen Cekanski - Farrand for the year 1989, seconded by Council Member Coleman.
The motion carried.
Council Member Zakrzewski made a motion to reappoint Roman Piasecki and Sandy Combs
as redevelopment commissioners, seconded by Council Member Coleman. The motion
carried.
Council Member Voorde made a motion to appoint Edward Baer to the Human Rights
Commission, seconded by Council Member Luecke. The motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 1684 -89 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, COMMENDING JOHN VOORDE FOR HIS
DEDICATED AND CONSCIENTIOUS SERVICE AS COUNCIL
PRESIDENT DURING THE 1988 CALENDAR YEAR
WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes that
JOHN VOORDE was duly elected President of the Council at the first official meeting
in annual of 1988; and
WHEREAS, the Council notes that over the past twelve (12 months, JOHN VOORDE
has provided the leadership which set a tone for a positive working relationship
between the new Common Council and the new City administration; and
WHEREAS, the Council recognizes with pride that among the many contributions
made to our community in 1988, one of the most challending was the successful
completion of the firefighters negotiations culminating in a two -year agreement
under Council President Voorde's leadership; and
WHEREAS, the Common Council applauds Council Member JOHN VOORDE for a job "well
done" and thanks him for a year of dedicated, diligent, and conscientious service
as Council President, and for being a caring public servant.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend,
Indiana, as follows:
SECTION I. On behalf of all of the citizens of South Bend, Indiana, the Common
Council publicly commends and thanks Council Member JOHN VOORDE for a job well done
as President of the Council in 1988.
SECTION II. The Common Council publicly acknowledges Council Member JOHN
VOORDE (a /k /a "Mr. Negotiator /Realtor ") for his fine leadership abilities which
helped foster a positive atmosphere for the betterment of our entire community.
SECTION III. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after
its adoption by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor.

There being no further business to come before the Council, unfinished or new,
Council Member Luecke made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Council Member
Niezgodski. The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned at 12:20 p.m.
