AN ORDINANCE APPROVING A CONTRACT BETWEEN STREMMEL &
HILL, INC., AND THE BOARD OF WATER WORKS COMMISSIONERS
IN THE AMOUNT OF $113,985.00 FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF
MEDIA AND REPAIR OF FILTER NOZZLES AT THE EDISON FIL-
TRATION PLANT.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND INTENT:
That bids being duly accepted and opened, approval of the
award of a contract in the amount of $113,985.00 to Stremmel & Hill,
Inc., the low bidder, is requested in order to replace media and
repair filter nozzles at the Edison Filtration Plant.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I. That a contract in the amount of $113,985.00
between the Board of Water Works Commissioners and Stremmel & Hill,
Inc., P.O. Box 218, LaFontaine, Indiana, to replace media and repair
filter nozzels at the Edison Filtration Plant is hereby approved.

There will be presented at first reading of
Council Meeting an ordinance approving a contract
of Water Works Commissioners and Stremmel & Hill,
of $113,985.00.

The proposed contract is a result of Stremmel & Hill's low bid
being accepted by the Board of Water Works Commissioners contingent
to your approval for the removal and replacement of filter media
(anthracite and gravel) and cleaning and repair of filter nozzels
at the Edison Park iron removal plant. The plant is currently 15
years old, and no media cleaning or nozzel replacement has taken
place. As a result the plant will not operate as it was designed to
operate, and polyphosphates must be added to increase the efficiency
of the plant.
The work covered in this contract is actually Phase I of a two
phase project designed to eliminate the use of polyphosphates and,
therefore, save the yearly expenditure of about $60,000.00 for this
additive. If you have further questions, please feel free to con-
