Dear Council Members:
CITY of SOUTH BEND
ROGER O. PARENT, Mayor
COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601

There will be presented for your approval at first reading of
the November 9, 1981 Council Meeting an ordinance appropriating
$43,445.00 from the Sewage Works Depreciation Fund to line item 260.0
Contractual Services of the Bureau of Sewers budget. As you will
recall, earlier this fall we had a major sewer failure of the 36"
brick sewer which runs on the north side of Sample Street from the
railraod crossing at Chapin east approximately 500 feet. The Board
of Wastewater Commissioners upon my recommendation declared an
emergency situation and replaced the whole 500 feet as opposed to
making spot repairs. If you will recall, this is not the first
problem we've had with that line.
After receiving three quotes from contractors the Board author-
ized the low quote, H. DeWulf Mechanical Contractors, Inc., to make
the repairs based on their estimate of $33,800.00 excluding the cost
of replacement pipe which was directly purchased by the Bureau of
Sewers. Work is completed and that portion of the sewer is operating
fine. I appreciate the Council's cooperation in this matter. If
you have additional questions, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely,
Michael L. Vance
