STATEMENT FROM COUNCILWOMAN GOODEN-RODGERS
It has recently been brought to my attention that a conversation between a local
blogger and me was posted on Facebook. As an elected official, I understand and
respect the role of the media and bloggers. In our community, the press, freedom of
speech, and the free exchange of ideas are all fundamental to our democracy.
However, I do believe that it is essential for all voices in public discourse to adhere
to high standards of accuracy and fairness. Reporting on or posting false or
misleading information to blog sites and other media outlets can be damaging,
especially when the post fails to depict the entire conversation. I hope we can all
contribute positively and constructively to our public discussions. As
councilwoman for the 2nd district, I remain committed to transparency and will
always welcome respectful engagement with all community members, including
bloggers and independent journalists. However, we should not tolerate bloggers or
independent journalists who use their platforms to bully, harass, or intimidate
others, especially common council members.
