Committee Chair Niezgodski called to order the Public Works and Property Vacation Committee
meeting at 4:15 p.m.
Bill No. 62-24—Alley Vacation—South Chestnut Street and South Walnut Street
Ariel Geary, 705 Lafayette Northeast Avenue, Grand Rapids, MI 49503, representing South Bend
Metal Products, petitioned to vacate the alley between Chestnut Street and the parcels 018-3076-
3055 and 018-3076-3053. The petitioner aims to replace the fence for the benefit of the shop and
its employees.
Committee Chair Niezgodski asked whether a turnaround point would be included on the property.
Ariel Geary confirmed that a turnaround would be provided.
Citizen Member Carl Litrell inquired if the turnaround would be dedicated for public use.
Gemma Stanton, Project Engineer, with offices on the 13th floor of the County-City building,
clarified that the alley vacation would allow for the dedication of the turnaround to the public.
Committee Chair Niezgodski also specified where the relevant picture could be found in the
presentation packet.

Committee Vice-Chair White inquired about the number of employees associated with the
petitioner. She also mentioned that she has researched the matter and spoken to residents in the
surrounding area, who expressed their support for the bill.
Ariel Geary stated that South Bend Metal Products has five (5) employees.
Committee Chair Niezgodski opened the public hearing and nobody spoke.
Committee Member Sherry Bolden-Simpson motioned to send Bill No. 62-24 to the Committee
of the Whole with a favorable recommendation, which was seconded by Committee Member
Karen White and carried by a vote of five (5) ayes, with one (1) committee member absent.
