PURPOSE OF REQUEST: Budget Request for $120,000 for installation of Parking Garage Equipment at the
Main/Wayne Parking Garage
SPECIFICS: On June 13, 2024, the Redevelopment Commission closed on the transfer of the parking garage at 119
Wayne Street in downtown South Bend. The parking garage had previously been operated as a private monthly
payer only parking garage. Since the acquisition, the parking garage has continued to operate for monthly payer
parking only. It is the intention of City staff to have the parking garage opened as a fully public parking garage in-
line with the other public parking garages downtown with daily and hourly parking available. Once opened as a
fully public parking garage, the hourly, daily, and monthly rate will match the other downtown public garages
with rates set by the Common Council.
For the garage to open to daily public parking, new systems need to be installed in the garage including new
gates, new mechanicals, and other sensors to integrate the garage into the larger City parking garage software
ecosystem. This budget request of $120,000 will fund the cost of the new equipment, installation, and
implementation. Staff recommends approval of the budget request with the intention to fully open the 119
Wayne Street parking garage for full public use.
