RE: Request for Honorary Street Sign – Honorable Ray Snyder Blvd.
Dear Mr. Dieter:
At its September 24, 2024 meeting, the Board of Public Works approved the application
for the temporary placement of a sign in the name of Honorable Ray Snyder Blvd. at the
intersections of Angela Blvd. and Portage Ave. and Portage Ave. and Elwood Ave.
Pursuant to the application, a fee of $200 is required for each sign. Currently, there is an
outstanding balance of $250.00. The payment should be made to the City of South Bend. Once
this amount has been paid, the City will manufacture and install the signage at the designated
location(s). Per the Board of Public Works new policy on honorary street signs (Resolution No.
58-2022), the approved sign may remain in place for a period not to exceed Five (5) years.
Please contact Denise Miller, Customer Service Coordinator, Street Department, at (574)
235-5939 to coordinate the time and placement of the sign(s).

CRITERIA FOR HONORARY STREET SIGNAGE IS LISTED IN BPW RESOLUTION NO. 58-2022. PLEASE INSERT YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS IN THE APPROPRIATE FIELD BELOW FOR THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
1.The signage does/does not constitute a public safety hazard or public nuisance.2.The signage or feature would/would not interfere with normal City operations or services.
3.All application, petition, and fee requirements have been met.

Dear Board Members:
I am writing to request that the Board name the 1300 block of
Portage Avenue in honor of Ray Snyder.
Please consider Ray’s Portage Avenue and South Bend legacy:
Ray Snyder’s legacy includes his longtime auto service station
business and the two generations of Portage Sunoco and Snyder
Brothers Garage satisfied, loyal customers who have trusted Ray’s
proven auto repair expertise, courtesy, friendliness, and fairness
while the service station has served as an anchor for the Portage
Avenue business district.
Ray’s legacy includes his 50 years as the, largely behind the scenes,
unheralded, guiding force and chief benefactor of Chet Waggoner
Little League. Literally thousands of families have benefitted from
his dedication and commitment to the integration of athletics,
family, and community.
Ray’s legacy includes his friendly, familiar, low-key presence
patronizing other Portage Avenue businesses since the early 1960’s.
Ray’s legacy includes his role as an unoƯicial auto mechanics
mentor to otherwise potential wayward teens who he kept oƯ the
streets while they apprenticed at Portage Sunoco beginning in the
1960’s.
Ray’s legacy includes his seldom mentioned years of honorable
military service to our country.
Ray’s legacy includes his boys, Jim, Dan, and Russ and grandson Bill
who have followed in his footsteps by providing fair, honest,
courteous, qualified service to their auto repair customers.
Ray’s legacy includes his induction into the South Bend Hall of Fame
as one of our community’s humblest, most deserving “everyman”
members.
I hope you will agree that Ray’s legacy as a fair, honest, and
respected local business owner, as a quiet, unassuming community
leader, and for his lifetime of Hall of Fame worthy service in South
Bend deserves naming the 1300 block of Portage Avenue in his
honor. It will serve as a permanent tribute to Ray’s unceasing work
for the stability and betterment of Portage Avenue and the South
Bend community.
