Committee Chair Canneth Lee called to order the PARC Committee meeting at 4:04 p.m.

Committee Chair Lee noted that an amazing year has been planned.
Jonathan Jones, 2203 Basin Street, South Bend, the Director of Recreational Experiences, with
offices at noted that hi s program addresses aquatics, ice programming, athletics, the Howard Park
Event Center, and the O'Brien Campus. There are approximately twenty-one (21) full-time and
part-time pennanent staff and approximately one hundred and ten ( 110) seasonal staff There are
three hundred and sixty-seven (367) programs via this division. There is a significant amount of
youth subsidizing and scholarships to these programs.
Cynthia Taylor, with offices at 219 S. St. Louis Blvd, noted that she oversees four centers. Within
this, there have been fifty (50) rentals with over three thousand fi ve hundred and seventy (3,570)
participants. There have also been classes that nine hundred twenty-eight (928) people have
attended. There have been one hundred twenty (120) hours of Sunday public programs. There have
been thirty thousand five hundred and thirty-seven (30,537) participants in gym activities. Senior
and youth have been positively impacted by programming. She noted that some programming from
the MLK Center will be moving due to renovations.
Emily Sims, the Chief Development Officer, 301 S. St. Louis Blvd, noted that they have received
over three million dollars ($3 ,000,000) in grant applications this year, as well as a one million
dollars ($1 ,000,000) million in private funds . This is outside of the twenty-four million dollars
($24,000,000) received in pledges for the Morris renovation project. They have distributed two

thousand (2 ,000) free skate tickets, five hundred eighty (580) free Broadway tickets, scholarships,
etc.
John Martinez, with offices at I 020 High Street South Bend, explained that they have recently
doubled the number of staff, as retention is extremely important to the department. Staff has
received additional training for emergency situations. There have been investigations on how to
engage with the community more thoroughly. For example, there is a tree program where citizens
can request a tree and it is cared for by the city for the first year. They have been able to increase
tree access to the west end, where there needs to be more greenery. Supporting diversity in
leadership is being done.
Eric Gia vi ch, Director of Growth and Opportunity, with offices on the fourteenth (14th) floor of
the County-City building, noted that the Morris Center is going into its hundredth (100th) year.
There were significant renovations. He provided information regarding Morris Fest, which
increased spending in the area by approximately two hundred fifty percent (250%). This event
builds the community as well as supports the economy. There is a campaign to raise thirty million
dollars ($30,000,000) for equity in arts, and donations are currently at twenty-four million dollars
($24,000,000). He noted that the Potawatomi pool was in disrepair and this is being investigated
on how to repair it. A total renovation would be approximately five million seven hundred
thousand dollars ($5,700,000). There is concern regarding the overall aquatic program in South
Bend.
