Subject: Transfer of City -Owned Property to Habitat for Humanity
Date: May 21, 1993
OurDepartment has been assisting Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County with
obtairiing properties in the Northeast Neighborhood for their "Blitz" this coming August.
During this "Blitz" Habitat for Humanity plans to build five new homes in week for
families of lower income. It was for this project that the Board of Public Works tranfered
four properties to Habitat several weeks ago. At that time, however, they still needed to
find one additional lot upon which to build the fifth house.
Habitat for Humanity has now identified the fifth lot. This lot is owned by the City of
South Bend. It is located on the southeast comer of the intersection of Cedar and Arthur
Streets. The tax key number for the lot is: 18-5083-2914. A map shoeing th location of
the property is attached.
Earlier this week I spoke to Mary Mueller as to the processs of having the lot tranfered to
Habitat for Humanity. Mary suggested that I ask you to contact the various City
Departments you usually do to obtain their input after a request to purchase a City -owned
lot is received by the Board of Public Works to determine the City's need for the lot.
If none of the Departments has any objections for transferring the vacant lot, we will then
ask Mary to proceed with transfering the property to Habitat for Humanity.
Please contact me at extension 9660 if you have any questions. Thank you for your
assistance in this matter.
