HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-12-04 Council Organizational Meeting Minutes ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING JANUARY 5, 2004 Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, met in the Council Chambers of the County-City Building on Monday, January 5, 2004, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Councilmember White and the Invocation and Pledge to the Flag were given. ROLL CALL Present: Derek Dieter 1st District Charlotte Pfeifer 2nd District Roland Kelly 3rd District Ann Puzzello 4th District David Varner 5th District Ervin Kuspa 6th District Al "Buddy"Kirsits At-Large Karen L. White At-Large Sean Coleman At-Large Absent: None ELECTION OF COUNCIL PRESIDENT FOR 2004 Councilmember Kirsits nominated Councilmember White for the office of President. Councilmember Pfeifer seconded the motion which carried by a vote of nine ayes. Newly elected President White thanked the Council for the opportunity to serve in this capacity and looks forward to working with Mayor Luecke and building South Bend into a 21st Century City. ELECTION OF COUNCIL VICE-PRESIDENT FOR 2004 Councilmember Pfeifer nominated Councilmember Kelly for the office of Vice-President. Councilmember Kuspa seconded the motion which carried by acclamation. ELECTION OF CHAIRPERSON- COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE FOR 2004 Councilmember Dieter nominated Councilmember Coleman for the office of Chairperson- committee of the Whole. Council President White seconded the motion which carried by acclamation. RE-APPOINTMENT OF COUNCIL ATTORNEY - 2004 Councilmember Puzzello made a motion to reappoint Ms. Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand as the Council Attorney for 2004. Councilmember Kuspa seconded the motion which carried by acclamation. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Council Member Coleman stated that he is seeking the position of St. Joseph County Treasurer in the upcoming 2004 Primary election. Mayor Steve Luecke addressed the Council and welcomed the newly elected Councilmembers. He indicated that he is looking forward to working together with the Council to make great progress for the City of South Bend. 1 1 A moment of silence was invoked on the passing of Rhoda Bradshaw, a member of the Transpo Board.
