Dear Neighbor: Morris Performing Arts
Center
Last month, I had the opportunity to deliver a State of the City address at LaSalle http://www.morriscenter.org
Intermediate School, outlining our City's accomplishments in 2012 and laying out May 8th-19th
ambitious and exciting new goals for the coining year. I hope to briefly share with you Wicked
the three main pillars of my administration's policy and how these pillars support a single, Various times
overarching vision: a safe, inclusive and well-connected South Bend. For more information contact

Since taking office, my administration's first goal has been making sure the basics are Downtown south Bend
easy. I understand many South Bend residents face a variety of significant daily downtownsouthbend.com
challenges, whether it's putting food on the table for their children or working multiple May 3rd
jobs to snake ends meet. Because of this, I believe it is essential to provide our residents First Fridays-
basic services so seamlessly that they can take them for granted, allowing them to focus "Vintage Downtown"
on the other pressing issues of life. From clean drinking water— our public works team
delivered 6 billion gallons of clean water to the people of South Bend last year—to our
emergency response personnel, South Bend residents deserve basic services and a peace
of mind.
The second pillar of my administration's policy has been the deliverance of good
government. Through numerous initiatives, including "Mayor's Night Out" events, center for History:

an exhaustive and transparent budgeting process, and the issuance of South Bend's first
Ethics Code, we have sought to make government more accessible and accountable to May 1st
those it serves. B adopting a more people-focused approach, trading partisanship for Insights in History—
partnership and using technology to better serve all residents, we are transforming our
future and making South Bend a smarter, more vibrant city. sweet! The wonderful world

Our efforts are already turning heads. National Public Radio recently featured South & Ice Cream
Bend in a story about how to re-tool the American industrial economy, and a national century Center
publication associated with the Global IT firm Cisco Systems recently included us in www.centurycenter.org
their report on ten "Smart Cities" around the world. May 5th Saturday

Finally, my administration has sought to create jobs and put South Bend residents back St Joseph County
to work. Times are still tough, but unemployment has fallen 2.4% over the last two years. Public Library

It is up to all of us to write the next chapter in South Bend's story. The state of our City calendar/
rests on old strength and new hope, but only by standing and working together will we Community Events
make South Bend a place we and our children can be proud of for years to come. 3rd Annual Community
