WHITE, RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING BRIAN FRAZIER FOR THE FIRST EVER HBCU EXCHANGE WEEKEND AND WELCOMING TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY (TSU) TO THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND O rea6, as President of the South Bend Common Council and Third (3`d) District Councilwoman, Sharon McBride and At-Large Councilwoman Karen L. White of South Bend, Indiana are humbled to honor and officially welcome Tennessee State University(TSU)to the City of South Bend for the first(1st) ever HBCU Exchange weekend hosted by Brian Frazier, of Frazier Kid Productions; and 41 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are public and private institutions established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which, from their inception, have gifted Black people with access to education which was denied to them during slavery and segregation; and Oilleread, Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover has served as President of Tennessee State University since January 2013. Under her leadership as the university's first (1st) female president,TSU has experienced a significant increase in enrollment, alumni fundraising, research dollars and academic offerings. O among notable individuals graduating from HBCUs are Oprah Winfrey (Tennessee State University), Martin Lather King, Jr. (Morehouse College) Spike Lee (Morehouse College), Samuel L. Jackson(Morehouse College), Chadwick Boseman, (Howard University), Kamala Harris (Howard University), Stacey Abrams (Spelman College) and Keisha Knight Pulliam (Spelman College, Eta Kappa Chapter), Barbara Jordan(Texas Southern University); and 41‘fttlfti, locally, South Bend's Brian Fraizer is an Alumnus of Tennessee State University, graduating in 2002; and OOft•reurI, Tennessee State University was originally organized as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School in 1909 and began serving students on June 19, 1912. Its status was raised to a four-year teachers' college in 1922, and two(2)years later it was renamed the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal College; and 4 11, . .„ .,fir1,,..i,,„ Oer , after another five (5)years, "Normal" was dropped from its name. It was elevated to university status in 1951, renamed the Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial University, and received full-fledged land-grant university status by the Tennessee State Board of Education in 1958: and 67 rerj founded in 1912, Tennessee State University has grown dramatically from a small college to two (2) campuses: the 500-acre main campus and the downtown Avon Williams campus, which is located in the heart of Nashville near the State Capitol. The diverse student population of more than 9,000 represents forty-six(46) states and forty-five (45) countries and /erears, Tennessee State University is a comprehensive, urban, co-educational land- grant university offering forty-five (45) bachelor's degrees and twenty-four(24)master's degrees and doctoral programs including biological sciences, psychology,public administration, computer information systems engineering, administration and supervision and curriculum and instruction; and O teem, TSU has been listed for eleven(11) consecutive years in the U.S. News & World Report "Guide to America's Best Colleges"; and 67f‘retzef, in addition to its rich academic history,TSU is also known for its athletic success, fielding women's teams in basketball, cross country, golf, softball, tennis, track& field and volleyball and men's teams in basketball, cross country, football, golf ice hockey,tennis, and track& field; and 6 ‘ra74, it took a sporting event to establish the first HBCU Exchange weekend in South Bend, but the weekend will be enriched by many other activities other than a football game.
