ORDINANCE NO. 7 I V4-g.
AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING AND ESTABLISHING AN
HISTORIC LANDMARK UNDER ORDINANCE NO. 5565-73,
AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 4990-68, AS AMENDED,
COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE ZONING ORDINANCE OF THE CITY
OF SOUTH BEND.
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend
and St. Joseph County has petitioned for the designation of the
following described real estate as an Historic Landmark under
Ordinance No. 5565-73, as amended, to wit:
55 feet x 150 feet BOL 34
The improvements located upon said land can be commonly
described as 716 W. Colfax hereinafter referred to as the
"PROPERTY. "
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend
and St. Joseph County has recommended the designation of the
PROPERTY as an Historic Landmark.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH
BEND, INDIANA:
SECTION 1.
That the above described PROPERTY be, and it is hereby
designated and established as an Historic Landmark under
Ordinance No. 5565-73, as amended.
SECTION 2.
That this ordinance shall be in full force and effect from
and after its passage by the Common Council, approval by the
Mayor and legal publication.

historical notes
This two-story Builder/Queen Anne house has been moved twice, first in 1914 and again
in 1983. The original address and owner of this house is unknown. However it may have
been located at 434 or 436 N. Lafayette. In 1914 George Omacht moved the house to
218 W. Marion. Omacht appears to have purchased the house c.1893 and used it for
income purposes. (Omacht owned 3 or 4 houses on the same lot and from 1894-c.1914 lived
at 432 N. Lafayette) . The house remained in the Omacht family for several years after it
was moved to Marion.
George Omacht was one of South Bend's largest cigar manufacturers between c.1884 and 1916.
In 1983 the South Bend Lodge of Perfection, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry;
donated the house to Southhold Heritage Foundation, Inc. contingent upon moving the
house from 218 W. Marion. The house was moved to 716 W. Colfax, the wooden porch and
steps were repaired and all new materials duplicated the original.
