IOWA STREET REOPENED AFTER PLANE CRASH SITE PERIMETER REDUCED
All Residents Allowed to Return Home Except for Three Damaged Properties
SOUTH BEND—Due to the successful removal of the crashed aircraft from Sunday afternoon's
accident site, the City of South Bend has reopened Iowa Street and advised residents that they
can return to their homes.
This update does not apply to the three damaged homes on Iowa Street that have been
fenced off for safety and security concerns. This three-property perimeter is still under the
control of the National Transportation Safety Board as it continues the accident investigation.
The South Bend Fire Department's leadership has personally been in touch with the three
homeowners of the three damaged homes to discuss the next steps relating to their properties.
Due to serious safety concerns and the condition of two of the homes, fire personnel have gone
through the homes to collect salvageable personal belongings. These items have either been
given to homeowners personally or they are being stored for future access.
The City of South Bend Street Department supported removal operations with equipment and
also cleaned the street after the large pieces of wreckage were removed.
The South Bend Police Department will continue to have a security presence around the three
properties 24/7 since an active investigation is still underway.
At this time, regularly scheduled trash service is still scheduled for Thursday morning.
