Upon further site investigations, including sending a camera down the combined sewer outfall at this location, City staff found a collapse in the outfall within the range of the bank failure. Combined Sewer Outfall #26 is 18 inches and is the discharge point after the combined sewer meets an intercepting chamber to an 8-inch throttle pipe. This is a long-term control effort to eliminate dry weather overflows of the combined sewer system. The Department of Public Works Division of Engineering contacted Selge Construction Company and G.E. Marshall to request assistance with emergency repairs. Due to current work schedules, G.E. Marshall was not contracted for the repair. The Engineering team, along with HydroDigital, researched options for this repair and concluded with repairing the existing outfall and the stabilization of the bank. The cost of the repair totaled $139,725.00. The largest effort was the clearing necessary to access the outfall and get around the garage on the property. There is a detached garage and home that were constructed on top of this outfall. After the bank was cleared and a temporary access road was constructed, the contractor installed a trench box and temporary steel sheets to protect and hold the bank above the repair. The break in the sewer pipe was exposed and slip- lined with a 10-inch plastic pipe. The outfall to the river, the bank covering this pipe, and the temporary access point were reconstructed. 2833 S. 11th St.Niles, MI 49120 (269) 684-0846Fax: (269) 684-0842Phone: 227 W.
