SOUTH BEND RESPONDS TO PLANE CRASH NEAR AIRPORT
NTSB Starting Ini,estigation, City Handling Community Response
SOUTH BEND—City of South Bend personnel have been responding to a plane crash that
occurred Sunday, March 17, 2013, on Iowa Street near the South Bend Regional Airport at
approximately 4:25 p.m.
Three homes were damaged when the plane crashed. Due to the instability of the homes and the
serious danger due to jet fuel and wreckage, gas and power has been shut off to the three
structures.
A representative with Indiana-Michigan Power has confirmed to the City of South Bend that
power has been restored to the neighborhood with the exception of the three homes affected.
NIPSCO has confirmed to the City of South Bend that gas service has been restored to the
neighborhood with the exception of the three damaged homes.
In addition to the three homes affected, five additional homes remain under a mandatory
evacuation. Four are across the street on the west side of Iowa Street. One additional home is on
the east side of Iowa Street with the three damaged homes. The homes under mandatory
evacuation include the following addresses: 1609, 1610, 1613, 1614, 1619, 1620, 1623, and
1624.
Due to the proximity of these homes to the crash site, residents are asked to find alternate
accommodation indefinitely. The Red Cross is available to help residents who might need
housing assistance. If you are one of the residents affected and need housing assistance, please
contact the local Red Cross at 574-234-0191.
Residents who live in the neighborhood, primarily along Iowa Street, who are not part of the
mandatory evacuation have been cleared to return to their homes. Please note: only residents
who live in the neighborhood and can provide photo I.D. will allowed to be escorted to their
