Police Review cking@southbendin.gov Kathryn Hough* Assistant City Attorney khough@southbendin.gov Pam Claeys* River Park W Neighborhood pclaeys@southbendin.gov Jarveair Bourn* Supervisory Sergeant jboum@southbendin.gov Andrew Polanieki* Dean&VP of Student Life apolaniecki@hcc-nd.edu Chair Rachel Tomas Morgan formally began the meeting stating this is the first meeting of the new academic year, 2023-2024. Tomas Morgan noted that CACC was formed for positive collaboration and proactive measures to make advisory recommendations to the Common Council's Community Relations and Residential Neighborhoods Committees. Tomas Morgan then set the floor for the presenters in person for the meeting to speak first. Sarah Neitz, Assistant Director for Justice and Solidarity at St Marys college was the first to introduce herself and share her excitement in joining the CCAC. Andrew Polanieki, introduced himself and his role as the Dean of Holy Cross. He shared his excitement for the strategic plan initiatives in place for the upcoming school year which includes incremental growth for the amount of college students. He then introduced the new student representatives on the Student Government Association(SGA)who attended the meeting virtually. The first person to speak was student body president Bradley Szotko, a junior at Holy Cross College. Joseph Stokes,the vice president of the student body at Holy Cross College,talked about his excitement to work with Holy Cross and the impact they have on the incoming freshmen. The community and campus have been greatly involved as a result of this relationship. Tomas Morgan, the chair of the committee, congratulated the men and expressed gratitude for their introduction. Seargent Bourne, who works for the South Bend Police Department, formally introduced himself to the CCAC members. Seargeant Bourne, spoke of the upcoming kid-friendly Halloween event, Cops and Goblins, that is planned to take place on October 24, 2023. The Sergeant described his responsibilities and the process by which the department will distribute tickets for the event. The Department distributed approximately 7,000 tickets to members of the community. There was further discussion about this upcoming event amongst committee members. Chief Ruszkowski discussed the recent Howard Park Fusion Festival and how beneficial it was to the neighborhood. There was talk regarding the SBPD's desire to maintain community safety and the various challenges they have encountered. The chief further told the committee that the SBPD has been actively addressing local crime and making great efforts to protect the public. The floor was shared for more discussion on what could be done regarding safety measures to which Chief Ruszkowski informed the committee about a safety summit recently held at Notre Dame University. Seargeant Bourne offered his contact for any further questions the committee members may have in the future. Katherine Hough,City Attorney,provided her email and assistance to the committee for additional questions or concerns. Charles King, Community Review Board Director introduced himself and explained to the committee his role and responsibilities within his department. There was further discussion within the committee and introductions of new CCAC members/ SGA representatives. Committee Chair Tomas Morgan concluded the meeting with future plans for the CCAC. Tomas Morgan informed the Committee of the future meeting dates as planned around the upcoming holidays.
