I.SPECIAL MEETING
The Board of Public Safety met in a Special Meeting at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, with Board President Daniel Jones, and Board Members, Darryl Heller (not present) Lee Ross, Al Kirsits (virtual) and Pamela Claeys were present. Also present were Fire Chief Carl Buchanon, Attorneys Danielle Weiss, and Adam Taylor and Acting Board Clerk Hillary Horvath. Board Clerk Theresa Heffner was not present. The meeting was held at the Luther J. Taylor Sr. Fire Training
Center, 710 East Sample Street, South Bend Indiana AND virtually Microsoft Team at the following link: https://tinyurl.com/BPS-Special-Mtg09122023
Attorney Weiss asked that everyone mute their microphone when not speaking, Attorney Weiss then read through the agenda to note any additions or corrections. Attorney Weiss noted the correction of
the rank for Mr. Lopez will be assigned and reinstated as Firefighter 2nd Class instead of Firefighter 1st on the original recommendation letter.
A.ROLL CALL OF MEMBERSBoard President Jones welcomed the public, called roll, and confirmed the presence of the
Board Members.
B.FIRE DEPARTMENT
1.APPROVE RE-HIRING OF FIREFIGHTER 2nd CLASS - FERNANDO LOPEZ
Fire Chief Carl Buchanon requested the Board approve the re-hiring of former firefighterFernando Lopez effective September 12, 2023. Chief Buchanon stated Firefighter Lopezpreviously resigned from employment with the SBFD on March 18, 2023, and at the timeFirefighter Lopez had not yet obtained his certification as an EMT-Advance or comparablecertification which was a condition for employment. Chief Buchanon stated following his
resignation, Mr. Lopez obtained his certification and remains a member of the 1977 PensionFund through September 14, 2023 and meets all requirements for employment with theSBFD.
Therefore, upon a motion by Pamela Claeys, seconded by Lee Ross, and carried by a roll
call, the Board of Public Safety approved the re-hiring of firefighter Fernando Lopez.
2.SWEARING IN OF FIREFIGHTER 2nd CLASSCity Clerk Dawn Jones administered the oath.
B. ADJOURNMENTThere being no further business to come before the Board, upon a motion by Pamela Claeys,seconded by Lee Ross, and carried by roll call, the meeting was adjourned at 9:21 a.m.
