Regular Meeting Minutes
Met May 4, 2023 at 1818 Hours.
Held in the Board of Public Works Conference Room, County-City Building, 227 West

Animal Welfare Commission Members Present: Dr. Mariah Covey, Christina Gerken, and Becky Kaiser City Staff Present: Lindsay Cueller – SBARC Shelter Manager, Tom Panowicz – Attorney for
SBARC, Kylie Connell – Attorney for AWC, and Marissa Frattini – Legal Assistant for AWC
1. The meeting was called to order by Dr. Mariah Covey at 1818 hours.
2. Minutes for the hearing on Thursday, November 17, 2022 were approved with a motion made by Dr. Covey and seconded by Christina Gerken. The minutes for the meeting on
Thursday, December 8, 2023 will be reviewed at the next meeting. 3. Lindsey Cuellar discussed shelter reports from December 2022 through April 2023, as
well as the year-end reports for 2022. 4. Discussion regarding ETA for new Commission members appointed by Common
Council. Until that time, Becky Kaiser will be Interim Secretary for the Commission. 5. Dr. Covey stated her desire to step down from the Commission, and the Commission
discussed recruitment strategies for new members and the ordinance and Common Council’s requirement that the veterinarian serving must live in South Bend. 6. The next meeting will be on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at 1800 hours.
7. Motion to adjourn made by Dr. Covey. Seconded by Christina Gerken and Becky Kaiser.
