What is historic preservation?
“‘Historic Preservation’ is an endeavor
which seeks to preserve, conserve
and protect buildings, objects,
landscapes or other artifacts of
historical significance.”
What are examples of other “Top 10 Lists”?
Since 1988, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has curated
an annual list of America’s “11 Most Endangered Historic Places.”
The list, which has identified most than 300 sites to date, has been
successful in galvanizing preservation efforts –only a handful of
those sites have been lost.
Indiana Landmarks has similarly created a list of structures and
sites across the state of Indiana that require preservation advocacy.
Structure Identification Overview
HPC Staff met with and discussed structures with the Commission
members –some of the questions used to inform his process are:
•What can structure, were it to be demolished, would diminish your
perception of our community?
•What structure would benefit from preservation advocacy efforts?
•What kind of preservation concerns are ‘threatening’ this property?

•Propose Special Public meeting of the entire Historic Preservation
Commission to be held on May 1, 2023.
•The Commission could pass a resolution identifying the slate of
structures as the “10 Most Endangered” within South Bend and
Unincorporated St. Joseph County.
•Following this meeting/resolution, staff would draft a series of press
releases and articles highlighting these structures during “Preservation
Month” (May).
