SUBJECT: CITY TO HONOR ADELINE WIGFALL-JONES WITH HONORARY STREET SIGN DATE: THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 2023 CONTACT: COUNCILMEMBER HENRY DAVIS, JR., HDAVIS@SOUTHBENDIN.GOV, 574-300-5241 _____________________________________________________________________________________ City To Honor Adeline Wigfall-Jones with Honorary Street Sign Hairstyles have changed from Afros to Jheri Curls, to High Top Fades, twists, braids, and Dreadlocks, but Wigfall Barbershop has been a constant presence on the corner of Elm and Washington Streets for nearly 50 years. Adeline Wigfall-Jones opened Wigfall Barbershop at 1131 W. Washington St. in 1976 and it has remained a community institution over the years. “Ms. Adeline,” as she is affectionately known, has cut the heads of generations of boys, men, and women. Her shop has also been a vital community meeting place where people share important information, establish, or re-establish relationships and even get a delicious meal of fried chicken or polish sausage. Ms. Adeline’s business is one of the few remaining from an era when West Washington street was a center of commerce in the Black community, and Wigfall Barbershop withstood the decay and renewal of the block. Please join 2nd District Council Member Henry Davis, Jr. as we celebrate and honor the legacy of Adeline Wigfall-Jones with the unveiling of an honorary street sign on the corner of Washington at Elm Streets at 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2023. Councilman, Henry Davis Jr. 2nd District, City of South Bend, Indiana ###
