Agenda: Bill No. 13-03 Reconfirming 3801 Schafer Gear Dr. a/k/a 3849 Showerlux Dr.;
South Bend Gear
Bill No. 13-03 was the only item on the agenda of the Community&Economic
Development Committee. With all committee members present Chairperson Gavin
Ferlic opened the hearing by asking Kathy Hahn to explain the request in Bill NO. 13-03.
Essentially, Kathy explained due to a general economic malaise Schafer Gear necessarily
delayed the timing of their investment in machinery to expand production. Only recently
had Detroit Diesel updated their order for parts,thus allowing Schafer the financial
security to expand production. Kathy assured the Council all criteria for the five(5) year
personnel property abatement were met.
Kathy Cekanski-Farrand, Council Attorney, noted that state law allowed the Council to
extend the prior approval as requested by Schafer Gear.
The CEO and Schafer's attorney were on hand to answer questions.
The Council Attorney also noted a motion was in order to change the name of Showerlux
Dr.,the address for Schafer Gear listed in the original petition,to Schafer Gear Drive, its
present designation. Councilmember Dr. David Varner so motioned. Councilmember
Gavin Ferlic seconded and all agreed.
Subsequent to thanking Schafer from their investment Valerie Schey motioned a
favorable recommendation. Councilmember Dr. Fred Ferlic seconded and all agreed.
There being no further business to come before the committee at this time, Chairperson
Gavin Ferlic, adjourned the meeting at 3:49 p.m.
