A SPECIAL RESOLUTION OF THE SOUTH BEND COMMON COUNCIL, COMMEMORATING
VETERANS' DAY 2022, AND HONORING ALL VETERANS
fid, an armistice ending World War I between the Allied forces and Germany went into effect on
the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918; and
in November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, as Armistice Day,
commemorating the end of World War I, declaring that the day should be"filled with solemn pride in the
heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory"; and
G''l , on May 13, 1938, an act was approved which made November 11 in each year a legal holiday,
intended to honor veterans of World War I; and
O , in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day and
expanded the commemoration to all veterans "in order that a grateful Nation might pay appropriate homage to
veterans of all its wars"; and
6)irgaetas President Eisenhower's vision of Veterans Day remains as sacred today as it was in 1954 to:
"let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly,on the seas,in the air, and on
foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an
enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain"; and

WevtanI. The sacrifices made by American veterans should be remembered and honored each and every day, but
especially so on the day proclaimed by our Nation as Veterans Day.
II. At the same time, the sacrifices made by the families of veterans should also be remembered and
honored each and every day.
(W III. This resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption by the Common
Council and approval by the Mayor.
