ORGANIZATION MEETING JANUARY 7, 2013
Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana met in the
Council Chambers of the County-City Building on Monday January 7, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. The
meeting was called to order by Councilmember Dieter and the Invocation and Pledge to the Flag
were given.

ELECTION OF COUNCIL PRESIDENT FOR 2013
Councilmember Oliver J. Davis nominated Councilmember Derek D. Dieter for the office of
President. Councilmember Dr. David Varner seconded the motion. The motion carried by a roll
call vote of six (6) ayes.
ELECTION OF COUNCIL VICE-PRESIDENT FOR 2013
Councilmember Derek D. Dieter nominated Councilmember Oliver J. Davis for the office of
Vice-President. Councilmember White seconded the motion. The motion carried by a voice
vote of six (6) ayes.
ELECTION OF CHAIRPERSON COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE FOR 2013
Councilmember Derek D. Dieter nominated Councilmember Karen L. White for the office of
Chairperson, Committee of the Whole. Councilmember Tim Scott seconded the motion. The
motion carried by a voice vote of six (6) ayes.
REAPPOINTMENT OF COUNCIL ATTORNEY FOR 2013
Councilmember Derek D. Dieter made a motion to retain Attorney Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand
as Council Attorney for 2013. Councilmember Oliver J. Davis seconded the motion. The
motion carried by a voice vote of six (6) ayes.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Councilmember White advised that she will take the lead in 2013 to enhance communication
between the Council and the City Administration and Department heads.
Council President Dieter thanked the Council for the nomination of President. He stated that he
looks forward to working together in 2013.

There being no further business to come before the Council, he adjourned the meeting at 5:04
p.m.
