JONES South Bend Common Council 4 th Floor, County-City Building South Bend , IN 46601 CITY CLERK , ~OUTH BEN D, IN 1 Re: A SPECIAL RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA CONGRATULATING BLAKE WESLEY, ONE OF SOUTH BEND'S NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION'S 2022 FIRST ROUND DRAFT SELECTIONS Dear Council Members : Recently , two members of the South Bend community, Jaden Ivey and Blake Wesley, were selected in the first round of the NBA draft. Without conducting in depth research , I daresay this is an exceedingly rare ev ent for any city . I am therefore submitting special resolutions congratulating both young men. Please file this special resolution and include it on the agenda for the Council meeting on October 24 , 2022 , under "Special Business". Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely yours , Sharon McBride, President, South Bend Common Council (.'i7 11) 2:-3.'i -9~3 2 I • Fax (S7 I.) 2:-l5-!)I 73 • T D D (57 4) 23 .'i -.5.'i67 • h llp://wW\r.sou th be n di11.gm · BILL NO. 22-49 SPECIAL RESOLUTION NO. 4983-22 L CITYCL A SPECIAL RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA CONGRATULATING BLAKE WESLEY, ONE OF SOUTH BEND'S NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION'S 2022 FIRST ROUND DRAFT SELECTIONS ~ Blake Carrington Wesley was born in South Bend, Indiana on March 16 , 2003 ; and ~ Blake's parents, Derrick and Leslie Wesley, grew up in the South Bend area, and are products of the South Bend Community School Corporation; and ~ sports are in Blake's blood, his father was an outstanding basketball player at Riley High School, going on to play for Ball State University and his mother played basketball , ran track and was a cheerleader for LaSalle High School; and ~ Blake is also a product of the South Bend School Corporation, having also graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School in 2021 ; and ~ Blake's career with the Wildcats included 1,496 points, an average of27. l points a game; and ~ after an outstanding high school career where he was named to the Indiana All-Star team as a senior while leading the Wildcats to the 4A sectional title, Blake chose to stay in his hometown and play college basketball for the University of Notre Dame; and ~ in his year playing for the Irish, Blake led the team in scoring, averaging 14.4 points a game while also averaging 3.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals; and ~ Blake's career with the Irish included the game winning basket over perennial powerhouse Kentucky; and ~ Blake elected to take his talents to the National Basketball Association where, on June 23 , 2022 , Blake became the first player from the South Bend public school system to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft; and ~ the South Bend Common Council , along with all other South Bend basketball fans , wish to send Blake off to San Antonio with best wishes for a long and storied career in the NBA . Section I. The South Bend Common Council thanks Derrick and Leslie Wesley for choosing to return to South Bend to raise their family. Section II. The Common Council congratulates Blake for being one of the two first round selections from South Bend during the 2022 NBA draft. Section III. The Common Council wishes Blake all the best during his NBA career and all other future endeavors. Section IV. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor.
