After attending a Board of Park Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, he sent a letter to Andrew T. Berlin, owner of the South Bend Silver Hawks. He inquired why venues outside of the City of South Bend are being proposed for the upcoming job fairs. So far, he has not received a response. In yesterday's South Bend Tribune on page A10 a large paid ad appeared entitled "Looking For the Best In Michiana To Join Our Team" where it listed three (3) locations —none of which are in South Bend. Seeing the ad further disappointed the Council Member, who represents the area where the baseball stadium is located near Downtown South Bend. Council Member Davis noted that Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium was built in 1987 for about $11 million. It is owned by the City of South Bend and managed by the South Bend Parks & Recreation Department. The "Cove" is named after Stanley Coveleski, who was a Hall of Fame baseball pitcher who settled in South Bend after his career. "It is mystifying why not one of the job fairs is being held in South Bend", said Council Member Davis. " If indeed the `best in Michiana' are being sought to work at the Cove, why would South Bend be snubbed when we have an extremely talented and dedicated workforce?" I ant very concerned because the City of South Bend spent just about $7 million in 2011 on stadium upgrades and renovations; with another $1.75 million of TIF monies being spent also. After these investments by the City, the Silver Hawks were purchased by Mr. Berlin in late 2011. He then signed a twenty(20) year lease with the City of South Bend to keep the Silver Hawks at the Cove. "I acknowledge Mr. Berlin's own investment of well over $2 million into the Cove. He has brought new life to the Cove, but I do not understand the decision not to hold job fairs here in South Bend". Council Member Davis hopes that Mr. Berlin will schedule at least one (1) job fair here, in South Bend, the home of the South Bend Silver Hawks, and plans to pursue this until it happens.
