HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-2022 Welcoming The National Black Sisters' Conference Special Proclamation ouni 111 v � x r�" SPECIAL PROCLAMATION NO. 09-2022 A SPECIAL PROCLAMATION WELCOMING THE NATIONAL BLACK SISTERS' CONFERENCE,JULY 23-26, 2022 'Whereas, the National Black Sisters' Conference (NBSC) was established in 1968 to educate, support, and communicate to African American women religious; and Whereas, while confronting racism in society and the Catholic Church, NBSC's mission has been to foster: • Education and support of African American sisters toward effective ministry • Education toward community control of African American communities • Training in community organization and development • Development of religious education from an African American perspective • Development of African American spirituality • Identification of African American sisters throughout the United States; and 'Whereas, the NBSC is active in seeking social justice for all; and " Whereas, the NBSC, along with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, published a statement entitled "The Sacred Right to Vote" on January 17, 2022, in support of voting rights legislation; and 'Whereas, the NBSC, along with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious and the NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, issued a statement entitled "Celebrating a Black Woman Supreme Court Justice- A Justice for Our Times" on February 23, 2022; and 'Whereas, on April 22, 2022, the NBSC received the inaugural Distinguished Justice-Seeker Award from NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice; and Whereas, the annual meeting of NBSC is being held at the University of Notre Dame from July 23, 2022, through July 26, 2022. Now, therefore, be it proclaimed; by the Common Council of the City of South Bend; Indiana, as follows: Section I. The National Black Sisters' Conference is a shining example of social justice activism. Section II. Such activism is needed in the current unsettled times. Section III. We welcome the NBSC to South Bend for their annual meeting and hope their time here is rewarding and fulfilling.
