Staying together is progress. Working together is success. Heritage Trail | Winona Lake, IN | DES #0810409 This project was a 2.2-mile Lake City Greenway Trail for the Town of Winona Lake. This project consisted of two typical trail sections, a 10’ wide concrete section in the downtown area, and a 12-foot asphalt pavement section inside the former Chicago Boys Club park area. There is also boardwalk that connects the new trail to the existing Lake City Greenway Trail. This project also included amenities like a trailhead entrance/plaza at the Grace College Sports Complex, special trail directional signs, a parking area, special gates, and seawall design along the Winona Lake Canal By identifying a strategy that could save on the quantity of backfill, A&Z RPR Matt Curry proposed a way to save the community $130,000.00 Additionally, this project blocked the entrance to Grace College’s sports complex-potentially reducing attendance at events and ultimately affecting the college’s revenue. The team devised an alternate, yet convenient route that had minimal impact on event attendance. BUDGET-FOCUSED APPROACH Pufferbelly Trail | Fort Wayne, IN | DES# 1600772 The Pufferbelly Trail, much like the Coal Line Trail, was established on an old railway and included refurbishing the railroad bridge over Spy Run Creek. We incorporated seating, lighting and signage int our design for added convenience. This trail is now enjoyed by as many as 58,000 people a month! COMMUNITY-FOCUSED APPROACH The Pufferbelly Trail was a much- anticipated addition to the City of Fort Wayne, so the public was eager to learn about progress. A&Z went out of their way to provide information to media outlets and trail websites on top of regular communication with the stakeholders and nearby property owners. During the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum parking lot project, not only did they work to minimize the disruption of the traffic flow on Coliseum Boulevard, but they completed the project on time and under budget. From the administrative staff of A&Z Engineering to the members of the construction supervision crew, they were all professionals who went the “extra mile”to assure the satisfaction and quality of their work. Randy L. Brown Former CFE, Executive Vice President & General Manager of the Allen County Memorial Coliseum CITY OF SOUTH BEND CE SERVICES: COAL LINE TRAIL PHASE IIB DES #22001991 7 RELEVANT PROJECT EXPERIENCE Coming together is the beginning. Staying together is progress. Working together is success. During a pre-construction walkthrough, Mark Voss identified the ability to use 2 existing irrigation systems and 2 landscape gardens eliminating the need for several storm structures. This proactive measure saved time, money, and certainly kept nearby property owners happy. SCHEDULE-FOCUSED APPROACH A&Z completed construction inspection of Covington Trail. This included using asphalt and concrete trail pavement, drive approaches, curbing and ADA ramps along with pedestrian crossings. After Phase III of this project, residents were able to have pedestrian access to many popular locations in the southwest portion of Fort Wayne. Covington Trail | Fort Wayne, IN | DES #0600375 IPFW Pedestrian Bridge | Fort Wayne, IN | DES #0500874 465 feet over the St. Joseph River is now a shortcut for students attending Purdue Fort Wayne and trail goers using the River Greenway trail system. A&Z provided the inspection services for the duration of this state -of-the-art cable stayed-steel girder bridge. The project also included the incorporation of lighting and additional 200’ of sidewalk on the east end. Overall, the A&Z staff assumed responsibility for all materials testing,. Collaboration between A&Z, INDOT, the university, Engineering Resources and several contractors ensured the success of this project-and some very happy college students who now have a shorter walk to class! END-PRODUCT-FOCUSED APPROACH A&Z knew that this bridge needed to be safe, beautiful, and withstand the test of time. Our inspection services included testing all materials including several hundred cubic yards of concrete and steel encased concrete piles for the foundation. We went the extra mile to make sure that pedestrians could rely on this bridge to transport them safely –forever, all while aiming to create a structure worthy of monument status in the city. We made an excellent choice in selecting A&Z Engineering for this project [IPFW Pedestrian Bridge]. …Great job coordinating the interests of all players and designing and monitoring the construction of the improvements. This project had a few challenges and A&Z was able to successfully handle all of them. The final product has worked extremely well and was constructed in a timely manner. Staying together is progress. Working together is success. Bridge Painting | Lafayette, IN | DES #2001070, #2001073, # 2001074 A&Z has been providing inspection services for bridge painting in the Crawfordsville District. Throughout the process, our on-site staff ensured not only the safety and quality of the project, but that the surrounding area suffered minimal impact due to construction-including the Wea Creek on SR 25. A&Z is looking forward to presenting this final project, including two additional bridges, by November 2022. The engineers and project managers I have worked with at A&Z have been responsive,honest,fair,detail-oriented and extremely professional. They have gone above and beyond to anticipate and manage issues, and to ensure the quality of our projects. Lori Keys| Executive Director, Aboite New Trails, Inc At A&Z’s suggestion, the MOT was modified to include a lane shift instead of lane closure with flagger. This helped maintain the flow of traffic for the individuals who rely on this route for their daily commute and routine. COMMUNITY-FOCUSED APPROACH Conklin Bay Trail | Syracuse, IN Working delicately though protected wetlands, A&Z ensured that the residents and lake-goers of Syracuse, IN were able to fully enjoy all the area has to offer. A&Z provided the inspection services for 1.37 miles of trailway. A portion of this segment takes trail-walkers through the Rolland Wetland Conservation Area. Four overlook areas were incorporated into the design, allowing users to observe the reclaimed wetland ecosystem. Construction affects more than just traffic. During this project, A&Z demonstrated the ability to work with multiple individuals to ensure the safety of the delicate ecosystem in which they were working. After all, most residents use trail systems as a way to get fresh air and enjoy nature, so we aim to protect it. CITY OF SOUTH BEND CE SERVICES: COAL LINE TRAIL PHASE IIB DES #2200199 10 PROJECT UNDERSTANDING AND APPROACH Coming together is the beginning. Staying together is progress. Working together is success. SUCCESS: MORE THAN A COMPLETED PROJECT A&Z knows that for a project to truly be a success, clients deserve more than to see a project completed; they need to have a positive experience. This is our recipe for success. Coal Line Trail Phase IIB consists of converting an abandoned railroad into a multi-use path. In this phase we will provide CE services to rehabilitate an existing railroad bridge over the St. Joseph River and construct a plaza on the West Bank connecting the Coal Line Trail to Riverside Trail. The completed project should include amenities like benches, lighting, trash receptacles, bike racks, and bollards for residents’ safety and convenience. A&Z prides itself on not only communicating clearly but listening intently to the needs and wants of stakeholders. Often overlooked, listening is a key part to ensuring a productive, collaborative relationship. During our initial conference, clients should expect to be heard. Throughout the project, A&Z provides multiple opportunities for stakeholders to be updated on progress and to express concerns or pose questions. Communication is a two-way street that A&Z keeps open because we know it is the key to success. Like all RPRs and Inspectors, A&Z trains staff to ensure that structures meet all specifications. Starting with the initial site visits –even before the pre-construction walkthrough, A&Z will be on the lookout for potential obstacles to a project. In doing this, we are often able to save time and money by identifying and solving complications early. A&Z goes one step further by including RPRs and Inspectors in Stage 3 design walkthroughs. This puts them in the unique position to have knowledge of the intent behind design. At the end of the day,the residents of the City of South Bend deserve the safe, beautiful trail they’ve been promised. In their extensive experience with trailways,A&Z knows how these amenities greatly improve the quality of life within a community. We are committed to working with stakeholders to ensure a successful experience, start….to finish. PROJECT UNDERSTANDING LISTENING INTENTLY ATTENTION TO DETAIL FINAL PRODUCT Matt and Jason have already made an initial site visit and studied existing conceptual plans for Phase IIB of the Coal Line Trail Project. Staying together is progress. Working together is success. . At a minimum, A&Z will host bi-weekly meetings to provide updates and brainstorm. W e know that frequent one-on-one communication is key to success, and often meet with stakeholders individually to iron out details. REGULAR MEETINGS A&Z will be on-call, all the time providing 24/7 access to key staff. Emergency contact numbers will be on display. 24/7 ACCESS A&Z takes advantage of virtual meetings so that some of our busiest stakeholders, like utilities, can attend meetings. This keeps projects on-time, and, in our experience, even ahead of schedule. TECHNOLOGY A&Z RPRs know that accurate, detailed and timely documentation is key to ensuring adherence to plans and specs. The City of South Bend can expect thorough documentation of all communication from meeting minutes to shop drawings. THOROUGH DOCUMENTATION Residents are eager to use this beautiful trail and are curious about how construction will affect things like their daily commute. A&Z takes the time to communicate with nearby property owners and provides information and updates for media outlets-including the already established website for this project. UPDATING THE PUBLIC .
