PUBLIC SAFETY EOMMITTEE
To the Common Council of the City of South Bend:
The August 9, 1993, meeting of the Public Safety Committee
was called to order by its' Chairperson, Council Member
Eugene Ladewski, at 3:50 p.m. in the Council Informal
Meeting Room.
Persons in attendance included Council Members: Slavinskas,
Ladewski, Washington, Puzzello, Luecke, Coleman and Duda;
Fire Chief Luther Taylor, Battalion Chief James Cole, Tom
Bodnar, Gene Oakley, Don Porter and Kathleen Cekanski-
Farrand.
Council Member Ladewski noted that the purpose of the
meeting was to review Bill No. 63-93 which would appropriate
One Hundred and Fifty-four Thousand Dollars ($154,000.00)
from the EMS Capital Improvement Fund (EMS Fund #288) .
Fire Chief Luther Taylor presented the Bill. He noted that
the majority of the appropriation would purchase turn out
gear for the Fire Department. He and Assistant Chief Cole
then showed the actual turn out gear and showed how it would
be cooler, warmer, and made of PBI material. It would be
approximately five (5) pounds lighter and much more
comfortable. He noted that this is the first upgrade in
turn out gear since 1982 . A complete set would cost
,approximately Six Hundred Dollars ($600. 00) each.
Council Member Ladewski noted that much of the old gear is
worn and he recommended that it should be approved. Fire
Chief Taylor also noted that Twenty-five Thousand Dollars
($25,000.00) of the appropriation would allow the completion
of the refurbishing of a fire truck and an ambulance which
will be used at Notre Dame football games and as backup. If
the City would have contracted the refurbishing out, it
would have cost the City approximately Forty-five Thousand
to Fifty Thousand Dollars ($45,000.00 to $50,000. 00) .
Council Member Ladewski also noted that he has had
conversations with the Fire Chief with regard to the
possible purchase of a Hummer to replace the grass truck.
He noted, however, that due to the cost that perhaps a
surplus Hummer could be pursued.
Following further discussion, Council Member Duda made a
motion, seconded by Council Member Washington that Bill No.
63-93 be recommended favorably to Council. The motion
passed.
The Council Attorney then provided copies of the revised
handouts to be used at tonights' ratification meeting and
vote and tomorrow nights' by Fire Local Union 362 (copy
attached) .
There being no further business to come before the
Committee, the meeting was ajourned at 4:00 p.m.
