Cole & Son (Architects, designed in 1951) Property Owner: South Bend Community School Corporation Landmark or District Designation: Included within the legal boundary of the Jefferson School Local Landmark, ordinance #9089-2000 Rating: School is rated Outstanding DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: Two story wedge-shaped structure on a cement foundation. Walls made of brick with running bond of red and gray brick with white mortar, corners are not right-angles. Corner brick is interlocking and decorative. Roof is flat with stone cap parapet, chimney is canted to echo the rear plane of the building façade. Side wings are single-level and flat-topped, with wide wood overhangs and aluminum cornices. Deeply inset front entry is also canted to echo the rear plane of the building. Entry is double-leaved, fully glazed, with sidelights. Entry surround is wide cut-limestone block and esxtends vertically from foundation to roof line, encompassing a wide glass block panel on 2nd level. Coursed metal framed awning windows in panels of eight. Glazing is opaque blue. Windows form double horizontal bands across front façade. Glass block panels at rear with limestone sills. ALTERATIONS: HPC has records for projects related to Jefferson School, including eleven issued COAs. Two (2) COAs have been issued for School Field. APPLICATION ITEMS: “Replace the single pane glass non-thermal metal frame windows on the building west elevation with new insulated glass and panels in thermally broken metal frames. The existing configuration / elevation appearance of the windows – 5’ frame widths and vertical mull spacing – has been retained with the replacement window design. The vent sash style – a project out awning – for the replacement windows is the same sash type as in the existing windows. Taking a design que from the deep projecting overhangs on the building ends, a projecting sunscreen louver is incorporated onto the first floor windows full length of the openings. The existing masonry openings are retained without any change in size or configuration.” DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: The applicant has requested retroactive approval to: Replace existing steel framed windows on four sections of the primary façade of the structure. Each bank of windows is approximately 79’ 8 7/8”). The submitted renderings indicate that the configuration of these windows will change, with the upper third of the window being covered, and the lower two-third with glazing. A sunshade will be added below the filled-in upper third of the window opening. Replace two smaller sections of existing steel framed windows on the first floor. Each of these sections is approximately 12’ 8 7/8”. Per the submitted renderings, these window openings will be three windows tall. Replacement windows will be “EFCO” 550-I aluminum windows, indicated as “Architectural Grade Projected Flush-Face Window”. Staff were notified that work was being executed on the Building Services structure at the Jefferson School complex on May 24th. No building permit was acquired for the work in advance of construction. Staff met with the architect and other representatives of the property owner later that day regarding the proposed project. The original steel windows were in groupings of eight with mullions. Each group of eight panes is separated from the next grouping by muntins. A number of window sections have previously had panes removed and replaced with air-conditioning units. The new configuration of windows removes the groupings of eight and instead proposes installation of units that have reduce the window glazing to approximately two-thirds of the original configuration. STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: Group B The Commission has the authority to determine the architectural merits and the extent of any proposed treatment, renovation, or addition to a historic landmark. The commission will require drawings, plans, specifications, and/ or samples where appropriate. Maintenance The maintenance of any historical structure or site shall in no way involve any direct physical change except for the general cleaning and upkeep of the landmark. The Commission shall encourage the proper maintenance of all structure or sites ( appendix A: Minimum Maintenance Standards). Treatment Treatment shall be defined as any change of surface materials that will not alter the style or original form. Such improvements include reroofing, glazing, or landscaping lawns and may involve a change that can potentially enhance or detract from the character of the landmark. A treatment change of any surface whether on the landmark or in its environment may require a Certificate of Appropriateness if it significantly alters the appearance of the landmark. Although these kinds of changes may not require a Building Permit, a Certificate of Appropriateness may be necessary. The commission should review the proposed treatment for character and style consistency with the original surfaces. Renovation and Additions Renovation is the modification of a structure, which does not alter the general massing while an addition, is a change in mass. A modification, which involves the removal of a part of the landmark, should be considered under demolition (see demolition). Additions to landmarks should not detract from the original form and unity of the landmark and should not cover singular examples of architectural detail. Additions to landmarks should be added in a manner that does not disrupt the visible unity of overall appearance of the site. The proportions, materials and ratios of the existing structures should be carried through in the additions. Care should be taken not to change or alter the following: 1. Structure—– Necessary structural improvements, where safety demands should be accomplished in such a way as to cause minimal visual change to the original style and construction. 2. Material— Additions and improvements involving any new material in the landmark should be of the same material as the original. It should be the same size and texture. An alternative material may be allowed if it duplicates the original. a. wood—all wood trim should conform with existing trim in shape and size b. siding materials—the Commission discourages the covering or alteration of original materials with additional siding. Structures already sided with incompatible materials should be returned to a siding similar to the original when renovation is considered. Demolition Historic landmarks shall not be demolished. When a landmark poses a threat to the public safety, and demolition is the only alternative, documentation by way of photographs, measured drawings, or other descriptive methods should be made of both the exterior and interior of the landmark. The person or agency responsible for demolition of the landmark shall be responsible for this documentation. Moving The moving of landmarks is discouraged, however, moving is preferred to demolition. When moving is necessary, the owner of the landmark must apply to the Commission for a Certificate of Appropriateness. Signs No neon or flashing signs will be permitted unless they are original to the structure. Billboards and super-graphics will also be disallowed. Only one appropriate identifying sign will be permitted per business. Building Site and Landscaping These standards apply to both A and B) Required Major landscaping items, trees, fencing, walkways, private yard lights, signs ( house numbers) and benches which reflect the property’s history and development shall be retained. Dominant land contours shall be retained. Structures such as: gazebos, patio decks, fixed barbecue pits, swimming pools, tennis courts, green houses, new walls, fountains, fixed garden furniture, trellises, and other similar structures shall be compatible to the historic character of the site and neighborhood and inconspicuous when viewed from a public way. Recommended New site work should be based upon actual knowledge of the past appearance of the property found in photographs, drawings, and newspapers. Plant materials and trees in close proximity to the building that are causing deterioration to the buildings historic fabric should be removed. However, trees and plant materials that must be removed should be immediately replaced by suitable flora. Front yard areas should not be fenced except in cases where historic documentation would indicate such fencing appropriate. Fencing should be in character with the buildings style, materials, and scale. Prohibited No changes may be made to the appearance of the site by removing major landscaping items, trees, fencing, walkways, outbuildings, and other elements before evaluating their importance to the property’ s history and development. Front yard areas shall not be transformed into parking lots nor paved nor blacktopped. The installation of unsightly devices such as TV reception dishes and solar collectors shall not be permitted in areas where they can be viewed from public thoroughfares. SITE VISIT REPORT: N/A STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends denial, as the proposed project does not carry through the proportions, materials, and ratios of the existing structure with the new configuration. Eddy St., South Bend IN Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County WRITTEN DESCRIPTION EXISTING CONDITIONS: The existing windows on the West Elevation are original to the building consisting of single pane glass in non-thermal metal frames. Operable vent sashes are project-out awing function. The window units are on five-foot wide modules. This is typical for windows on the main and upper level. At the north and south ends of the building there are single story portions of the building with similar window units, and deep overhanging soffits. These window units are not thermally efficient in glazing, frames and composite assembly. The thermal value for a single pane glazed non-thermal frame window unit is less than R-1 at center of the glass. Refer to the existing building elevations photos included with this Application package. OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT: The Owner requested Hebard & Hebard Architects to design facade improvements that would enhance the building appearance and reduce energy consumption. A design concept was developed that includes: - Insulated glass in thermally-broken aluminum window units with R-3.5 at center of the glass specified - Sun shade louver mounted on the windows replicating the deep overhangs on the north and south ends of the building - Accent paint the horizontal metal fascia on the deep overhangs at the north and south ends - Metal panel graphic signage The contract cost to replace the windows and enhance the west elevation is $249,000 of the $257,800 total contract. Work required under this Section consists of providing and installing Aluminum Architectural Windows complete with hardware and elated components, insulated metal panel insert, and exterior attached sun shade devices as shown and indicated on the Drawings and as specified herein. 1. Project Location: SBSCS SERVICE BUILDING, 420 S. Eddy Street, South Bend, IN 2. Window Replacement W ork Includes: a. Provide labor, materials and equipment necessary to complete the work of the Contract, and without limiting the generality thereof. b. Remove existing sash, fixed glazing, frames and other accessories, materials and the like not required to remain as required for the installation of the proposed replacement system as established in the Contract Scope of Work in Division - 1 of the Project Manual. c. Removal from site and legal disposal of all removed materials, debris, packaging, banding and all other surplus materials and equipment. d. Provide new factory glazed, thermally broken, aluminum windows as specified herein, together with necessary mullions, panning, trim, expanders, operating hardware, installation hardware and all other accessories as required for a complete functioning window fenestration. e. Install insulation between window frames and adjacent construction. Install insulating material specified in this Section. f. Sealing of all joints within each window assembly. g. Sealing of entire perimeter – exterior and interior - of the window unit assemblies after installation. 08-51-00 - 2 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 2 3. Design Requirements: a. The window manufacturer is responsible for designing system, including installation instructions and necessary modifications to meet specified requirements and maintain visual design concepts. b. Requirements shown by details are intended to establish basic dimension of unit, sight lines and profiles of members. c. Provide assemblies free from rattles, wind whistles and noise due to thermal and structural movement and wind pressure. d. Installation instructions are to take into account building peculiarities and expansion and contraction movements so there is no possibility of loosening, weakening or fracturing connection between units and building structure or between units themselves. e. Provide for expansion and contraction due to structural movement without detriment to appearance or performance. f. Evacuate water without infiltration to interior from exterior face of wall, water entering joints, and condensation occurring within windows, by drain holes and gutters of adequate size or other acceptable method. g. Provide concealed fastening wherever possible. B. The window manufacturer is responsible for factory glazing all window units and types specified herein. The final glass color tint selection will be made by the Architect from samples submitted by the Contractor. C. This Contractor is responsible for all perimeter - exterior and interior - sealant installations at each window location. D. This Contractor is responsible for field measurements of openings. See Sub. Part 1.05 for additional requirements. E. Sunshade shall be designed as an integral part of aluminum architectural window system. 1. A proposal drawing showing full size details of all sunshade and window system components including all anchors, sunshade supports, and building attachments. 2. Engineering calculations documenting compliance with requirements of Section 1.05. 1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE: A. Windload Criteria: 1. The applicable State Building Code, current edition, having jurisdiction over the location of the Project. 2. The system shall be designed to withstand the following loads normal to the plane of the wall: a. Positive pressure of 20 psf at non-corner zones. 08-51-00 - 3 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 3 b. Negative pressure of 20 psf at non-corner zones. c. Negative pressure of 20 psf at corner zones. B. Source Quality Control: 1. Test Units: a. Air, water and structural test unit’s minimum size shall be in accordance with AAMA 101/I.S.2, 2/A440-17 to meet or exceed performance criteria for AW 100 Grade windows. b. All test size units shall be not less than a 48" (1219 mm) x 72" (1828 mm). Unit shall consist of a fixed lite next to a casement vent. The test shall be in accordance with AAMA and ASTM testing criteria. Down-sized testing will not be acceptable. . c. Life cycle testing shall be in accordance with AAMA 910-10. The unit size tested shall not be less than the greater of the industry test standard or the unit(s) specified for this Project. C. Test Procedures and Performances 1. Windows shall conform to all AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440 – 17 requirements for the window type(s) specified in this Section. In addition, the following specific performance requirements shall be met. a. Life Cycle Testing 1. Test in accordance with AAMA 910. There shall be no damage to fasteners, hardware parts, support arms, activating mechanisms, or any other damage that would cause the window to be inoperable. Air infiltration and water resistance tests shall not exceed specified requirements. b. Air Infiltration Test 1. With ventilators closed and locked, test unit in accordance with ASTM E 283 at a static air pressure difference of 6.27 psf (300 Pa). 2. Air infiltration shall not exceed .10 cfm/SF (.50 l/s•m²) of unit. c. Water Resistance Test 1. With ventilators closed and locked, test unit in accordance with ASTM E 331/ASTM E 547 at a static air pressure difference of 12.0 psf (720 Pa). 2. There shall be no uncontrolled water leakage. d. Uniform Load Deflection Test 1. With ventilators closed and locked, test unit in accordance with ASTM E 330 at a static air pressure difference of 90 psf (4309 Pa), positive and negative pressure. 08-51-00 - 4 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 4 2. No member shall deflect over L/175 of its span. e. Uniform Load Structural Test 1. With ventilators closed and locked, test unit in accordance with ASTM E 330 at a static air pressure difference of 150.4 psf (7200 Pa), both positive and negative. 2. At conclusion of test there shall be no glass breakage, permanent damage to fasteners, hardware parts, support arms or actuating mechanisms, nor any other damage that would cause the window to be inoperable. f. Forced Entry Resistance 1. Windows shall be tested in accordance to ASTM F 588 or AAMA 1302.5 and meet the requirements of performance level 40. g. Condensation Resistance Test (CRF) 1. Test unit in accordance with AAMA 1503.1. 2. Condensation Resistance Factor (CRF) shall not be less than 52 (frame) when glazed with .29 center of glass U-Factor. h. Condensation Resistance (CR) 1. With ventilators closed and locked, test unit in accordance with NFRC 500-2014. 2. Condensation Resistance (CR) shall not be less than 38 when glazed with .29 center of glass U-Factor. i. Thermal Transmittance Test (Conductive U-Factor) 1. With ventilators closed and locked, test unit in accordance with NFRC 100-2014. 2. Conductive thermal transmittance (U-Factor) shall not be more than .52 BTU/hr•ft2•°F when glazed with .29 center of glass U-Factor. D. Approved Manufacturers: The following manufacturers are approved for this project subject to providing products in compliance with the requirements of this Section. 1. EFCO 2. Other window manufacturers requesting to be considered “equal” and included in this Project must submit in addition to the test data enumerated in the preceding Sub-Section B, the following: detailed Shop Drawings for each window type and configuration identifying each component of each window and mull/panning profiles, a sample (24" x 36") window assembly, complete with the specified hardware, fixed over Project out sash assembly, 2 ½" frame depth and accessories for this Project. 1.04 SUBMITTALS: Comply with Division - 1 requirements. A. Provide the submittals package in a timely manner to meet the construction schedule. Allow ample time for a full resubmittal of Shop Drawings without affecting the Project overall schedule and the window delivery schedule, if the reviewed conditions/quality of the first submittal require a resubmittal. B. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's original published product data (no faxed sheets) with all proposed components and accessories highlighted. C. Test Reports: Provide test reports from AAMA and ASTM accredited laboratories certifying the performance results as specified in Sub-Part 1.03. D. Certification letter from window manufacturer stating that the tested window(s) meet and/or exceed the criteria for the AAMA window type(s) specified. E. Warranties: Submit the final draft of the warranty certificates as specified in this Section as they will appear in the closeout documents package. W arranties to be included: 1. Window Manufacturer’s W arranty 2. Pigmented Organic Finish Manufacturer’s W arranty 3. Insulated Glass Manufacturer’s W arranty F. Furnish complete Shop and setting Drawings and engineering calculations for review prior to fabrication. The Shop Drawings shall be prepared wholly by the window manufacturer or by a window manufacturer’s authorized third-party detailer exclusive from the Contractor. Shop Drawings prepared by the Contractor, excluding Contractor’s review information added thereon, will be cause for rejection of the Drawings in full without further additional review; resubmittal will be required in accordance with this paragraph and Section.. Shop Drawings: 1. Show quarter-inch to foot elevations, and full scale details of frames, hardware, and detailed anchorage to surrounding construction. Include - in the drawings set - a building plan drawing for each floor level showing where each window type is to be installed. The Drawings shall have all dimensions noted for the window units and rough opening requirements. Drawings reduced in scale, sheet size, etc. will be considered not in compliance with the Project requirements, rejected and will require resubmittal. 2. Refer to Sub-Part 1.05 for additional requirements to be included as part of the shop Drawings. 08-51-00 - 6 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 6 G. Samples: 1. Provide two (2) samples (12”X12” min.) of the insulated glass unit in the tint color specified. 2. Color Finish Samples – Provide (3) sets minimum for the following (Architect will return (1) one set after color selections have been approved: a. Provide color samples for the exterior finish. b. Provide color samples for the interior finish. c. Provide color samples for the insect screens. 1.05 FIELD MEASUREMENT: A. Obtain all necessary field measurements at the job site and be responsible for the accuracy and fit of this work with the work of other trades, and building conditions. The Contractor(s), window manufacturer and supplier shall be thoroughly knowledgeable of the variety of construction conditions occurring throughout this Project. Windows shall fit tight to surrounding construction. Field measurements shall be taken at each location for accuracy and fit. Field dimensions shall be verified for each and every location prior to preparation of shop Drawings and ordering of frames and glass. The Architect shall be provided documentation of field verified conditions and dimensions on the shop Drawings. The field measurements shall be noted on the shop Drawings in architectural dimensioning format as part of the original shop drawing preparation. The field measurement dimension lines shall have the suffix F.M. with each field measured dimension notation. Where field measurements identify sufficient dimensional deviation from the construction Drawings, the manufacturer’s Shop Drawings shall include the additional window elevation types with separate identification (i.e. X-1, A-2, etc.). Failure to include the field measurements or to have requests for the Architect to complete dimensioning, will be just cause for rejection of the Shop Drawings without adjustment to the Contractors contract schedule. 1.06 PRODUCT HANDLING: A. Protection: Use all means necessary to protect the materials of this Section before, during, and after installation. Protect the installed work of other trades during the storage and installation of the windows as that work which may be directly affected by the windows, storage and installation. B. Replacements: In the event of damage, immediately make all repairs and replacements necessary at no additional cost to the Owner. 1.07 WARRANTIES: A. Manufacturer’s Warranties: 1. Windows: Submit a written Warranty - executed by the window manufacturer - that guarantees materials and workmanship of windows for five (5) years. The Warranty shall include window extrusions, weatherstripping, trim, finish and all hardware supplied by the window manufacturer. The window manufacturer’s Warranty will cover repair or replacement of all defective window parts for the entire warranty term. The Warranty does not include the installation labor of windows and/or erection labor of walls. 2. Finish: 08-51-00 - 7 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 7 a. Pigmented Organic: The pigmented organic finishes on exposed surfaces of the windows and component parts are certified as complying fully with requirements of AAMA 2605 for pigmented organic coating and fully warranted against chipping, peeling, cracking or blistering for a period of five (5) years from date of substantial completion. Warrant finishes meeting AAMA 2605 against fading beyond AAMA standards. 3. Insulated Glass: Submit a written warranty, executed by the glass manufacturer, that guarantees insulated glass, purchased and factory glazed by the window manufacturer, against failure of hermetic seal for ten (10) years. The window manufacturer’s Warranty will guarantee to provide insulated glass to replace failed units for the entire warranty term. 4. Terms: The Warranty must be direct from the manufacturer to the Owner. This warranty cannot be pro-rated. A “pass-through” warranty will not be accepted. A copy of the manufacturer’s Warranty must be included in the submittal package. The fully executed warranty shall be submitted to the Owner at Substantial Completion of the Project and take effect beginning that date. 1.08 MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTION: A. The window Contractor shall schedule through the Architect a maintenance training session for the building Owner’s maintenance and designated staff after Substantial Completion of this Project. This session shall be conducted by the window manufacturer’s trained technical staff. The session shall include care, hardware components and adjustments, construction of the unit(s), etc. as covered by the manufacturer’s technical personnel. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A. The window units vary in size, configuration, operation and type. The Drawings define size, configuration and operation. B. The Project Basis of Design and Specification is: 1. Windows: EFCO 550-I aluminum architectural window 2. Sun Shade Device: EFCO E-Shade 2.02 MATERIALS: A. Aluminum: 1. Extruded aluminum shall be 6063-T5 alloy and temper complying with ASTM B211. B. Hardware: 1. Locking handles shall be cam type and manufactured from a white bronze alloy with a US25D brushed finish. 2. Operating Hardware a. Concealed 4-bar, stainless steel arms. C. Weather-Strip: 08-51-00 - 8 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 8 1. All weather-strip shall be Santoprene® or equal. D. Glass: 1. Windows are to be factory glazed consisting of 1” thick insulated glass with a center of glass U-Factor of .29 constructed as follows: a. Exterior lite: ¼” thick, Bronze color, Tempered glass b. Air space: ½” inch air filled. c. Interior lite: ¼” thick, clear color, Tempered glass with a surface coating of Low-E on the number 3 surface. E. Thermal Barrier: 1. All exterior aluminum shall be separated from interior aluminum by a rigid, structural thermal barrier. For purposes of this specification, a structural thermal barrier is defined as a system that shall transfer shear during bending and, therefore, promote composite action between the exterior and interior extrusions. 2. The thermal barrier shall be thermal struts, consisting of glass reinforced polyamide nylon, mechanically crimped in raceways extruded in the exterior and interior extrusions. 3. Poured and debridged urethane thermal barriers shall not be permitted unless a specific window unit is specified. F. Exterior Frame Extensions, Panning and Trim : 1. Exterior extensions, panning and trim components shall be extruded from prime billet 6063-T5/T6 alloy aluminum. Profiles shall match that shown on the Drawings. 2. The finish system and color shall match the window frame and sash. G. Interior Trim: 1. Trim shall be extruded from prime billet 6063-T5 aluminum alloy. 2. Finish shall match window frame and sash. H. Insect Screens: 1. Tubular extruded aluminum frames with corner keyed reinforcement. 2. Aluminum cloth with 18 X 16 mesh. Color as selected by architect. 3. Vertical sliding full width wickets. I. Sill Flashing/ Sill Starter: 1. Extruded aluminum prime billet 6063-T5/T6 alloy aluminum sheet 3003 H14. a. Profiles shall match those shown/noted on the Drawings and for the conditions of the openings. 2. The finish system and color shall match the window frame and sash. 08-51-00 - 9 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 9 J. Head Receptor/Starter: 1. Extruded aluminum prime billet 6063-T5/T6 alloy aluminum sheet 3003 H14. a. Profiles shall match those shown/noted on the Drawings and for the conditions of the openings. 2. The finish system and color shall match the window frame and sash. 2.03 FABRICATION- WINDOWS: A. General: 1. All aluminum frame and vent extrusions for hinged and fixed window units shall have a minimum wall thickness of .125". 2. Mechanical fasteners, welded components and hardware items shall not bridge thermal barriers. Thermal barriers shall align at all frame and sash corners. 3. Depth of frame and sash shall be as defined per window series specified in sub-Part 2.04. 4. Fabricate frames in the profiles shown on the Drawings. B. Frame: 1. Frame components shall be mechanically fastened double corner key construction at Operable Units. 2. Frame components shall be mortised, and tendoned on Fixed Window assemblies. 3. Extended frames/components: a. Where an extended sill outside leg may be required for window types going into the existing opening, the sill extension shall interlock with the window frame and be field trimmed to fit the sill conditions. Where the full perimeter of the existing opening requires an extended exterior frame leg, the extension shall be part of the extruded frame profile and not a field applied extension. C. Sash: 1. All sash extrusions shall be tubular. 2. Each corner shall be mitered, reinforced with an extruded aluminum corner key, hydraulically crimped, and "cold welded" with epoxy adhesive at Fixed Window Units; corners shall be mechanically fastened at Operable Windows. All corners shall be sealed weather tight. 3. Each sash shall have two rows of neoprene weatherstripping installed in specially designed dovetail grooves in the sash extrusion at Fixed Window Units. D. Glazing: 1. All units shall be glazed with the manufacturer's standard sealant process provided the glass is held in place by a removable, extruded aluminum, glazing bead. The glazing bead must be isolated from the glazing material by a gasket. 08-51-00 - 10 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 10 2. All units shall be glazed with a minimum of 1/2” glass bite. E. Finish: Each window unit will have not less than two differing finish colors. 1. Exterior Finish: All aluminum windows, framing, trims and other components shall receive a high performance baked-on 70% PVDF / Kynar Polyvinylidene Fluoride / Fluoropolymer coating system finish conforming to AAMA 2605, and Aluminum Association Designation AA-M12C22-A4X. More than one color may be selected for this Project. a. Colors: Selected by the Architect from the manufacturer’s full line of colors 2. Interior Finish: All aluminum windows, framing, trims and other components shall receive a high performance baked-on 70% PVDF / Kynar (Polyvinylidene Fluoride / Kynar Fluoropolymer) coating system finish conforming to AAMA 2605, and Aluminum Association Designation AA-M12C22-A4X. More than one color may be selected for this Project. a. Colors: Selected by the Architect from the manufacturer’s full line of colors. F. Interior Trim : 1. Provide two-component interior trim sections of size and configuration as shown on the Drawings, and as required for a complete and finished installation. Interior trim shall cover all wood frames to remain, all wood blocking and shims, and cover all voids in existing and new wall construction. Architectural profiled trim shall have jamb sections die coped by the manufacturer. a. Finish and Color: Match the window interior finish system and color specified. 2.04 WINDOW TYPES - Approved Window Series: A. As indicated on the Drawings: 1. Each of the manufacturers’ window series listed herein have been determined to meet these project specifications for performance, fabrication and construction, and aesthetic quality subject to this Section. The approved window series are: a. EFCO: 550-I (Basis of the Project Design and Specification) b. Graham Architectural Products: GS6600 Series c. Kawneer Company: 8225 TLF: d. WAUSAU Window and Wall Systems: 2250-i Invent Series e. Winco Windows: 1150 Series f. YKK-AP: YOW 225 TU Series e. Architect approved equal required prior to bid. 2. Operation: Project out and fixed. 08-51-00 - 11 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 11 3. Glazing: 1" insulated glass and 1” insulated metal panels as specified in this Specification. 4. Size: As indicated on the drawings. a. Frame Depth: 2 7/16” detailed and specified; (2 1/2” nominal) 2.05 INSULATED METAL PANELS: A. The window manufacturer shall provide and install an insulated metal panel into the glazing pocket of the window frame where shown on the drawings. B. Metal Panel Construction: 1” thick 1. Exterior: .040. Aluminum sheet; embossed 2. Core: Polyurethane foam 3. Interior: .040. Aluminum sheet; embossed C. Finish: Match finish system of the window frame. 1. Colors: As selected by the Architect. A minimum of two (2) colors – exterior and interior - will be selected. 2.06 EXTERIOR SUN SHADE DEVICES: A. Aluminum 1. Extruded aluminum shall be 6063-T6 alloy and temper. B. Anchors 1. Perimeter and floor line anchors shall be aluminum or steel. All steel anchors shall be properly insulated from the aluminum. C. Fabrication: 1. General a. All aluminum horizontal extrusions (blades) shall have a minimum wall thickness of .063" (1.5 mm) to .125" (3 mm). b. Sunshade “arms” and mullion clips shall be extrusions with a nominal wall thickness of .25” (6 mm). 2. Sunshade Device a. Horizontal components (blades) shall be mechanically fastened by means of extruded aluminum screw splines. D. Finish 1. As specified in 2.03, E of this Technical Specification Section. 08-51-00 - 12 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 12 E. Approved Manufacturers and Products: The sun shade device manufacturer shall be the same manufacturer as the window products being installed. 1. EFCO: E-Shade (Basis of the Project Design and Specification) 2. Graham Architectural Products: (Compatible and integral with window system) 3. Kawneer Company: Versoleil SunShade – Outrigger System 4. WAUSAU Window and Wall Systems: Clear Story 5. Winco Windows: (Compatible and integral with window system) 6. YKK-AP: Therma Shade 7. Architect approved equal required prior to bid PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 SURFACE CONDITIONS: A. Inspections: 1. Prior to all work of this Section, carefully inspect the installed work of all other trades and verify that all such work is complete to the point where this installation may properly commence. 2. Verify that all windows may be installed in accordance with all pertinent codes and regulations, the original design, and the referenced standards. B. Discrepancies: Do not proceed with installations in areas of discrepancy until all such discrepancies have been fully resolved. Immediately notify the Architect in writing of all discrepancies discovered. 3.02 INSTALLATION: A. Set window units plumb, level, and true to line, without warp or rack of frames or sash. Provide proper support and anchor securely in place. 1. Separate aluminum and other corrodible surfaces from sources of corrosion or electrolytic action at points of contact with dissimilar materials in compliance with AAMA 101, “Dissimilar Materials” section. 2. Provide all required clips, anchors, and fastenings as required by job conditions to secure to adjacent construction and/or steel structure. 3. Install all exterior extensions, panning and trim with clean crisp hairline joints. Head to jamb joints shall be miter appearance with the jamb extending behind the head piece. Miter cut and cope/back cut the head section for a tight joint. Jamb to sill joints shall be vertical. Back seal all exterior panning and trim joints before installing the window unit where practical. Interior trim joints shall be closed miter cuts at the head-to-jamb, and tight horizontal joints at jamb-to-sill. B. Set sill members and other window components in a bed of sealant, or on a gasket to provide a weathertight construction. Coordinate the window installation with wall flashing and other components of the work. 08-51-00 - 13 ALUMINUM WINDOWS – SERVICE BUILDING 08-51-00 - 13 1. Install low-modulus polyurethane spray foam insulation in voids and cavities of the window frame and assembly where required, shown on the Construction Drawings, or field directed by the Architect, to maintain a thermal barrier between the exterior and the building interior. Install non-gasing closed-cell backer material in the void between window and opening – exterior and interior. 2. Provide and install perimeter sealants and backer rod at the perimeter of all frames, interior and exterior, in the wall openings. Install a non-gassing closed-cell backer material in the void between window frame and wall opening – exterior and interior as conditions require to support the sealant. Tool finish the sealant joint smooth, with a slight concave profile and having a consistent appearance and dimension around the window/opening. a. Sealant color shall match the window frame finish color. Refer to Section 07-92-00 for additional sealant information and requirements. C. Perform all necessary field adjustments to the window sash and opening hardware to provide smooth operation of the sash and accessories, and for weathertightness to meet the specified infiltration standards. The adjustments shall be performed by technicians trained by the window manufacturer. 3.03 PROTECTION AND CLEANING: A. Protect the aluminum window materials and finishes from damage by other construction trades, activities and materials. B. After installation, metal and glass surfaces of the walls shall be cleaned on both interior and exterior, of all mortar, plaster, paint, and other contaminants. Remove all stickers – except egress labels, shipping shims/banding, and adhered labels. After being cleaned, all work shall be protected against damage until it is accepted by the Owner. C. Satisfactorily repair any damaged material, or replace with new materials. D. Cleaning Agents: 1. Do not use abrasives or harmful cleaning agents or chemicals. Follow the window and glazing manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning the aluminum frames and components, and glass surfaces. END OF SECTION 08-51-13
