historical notes
Albert P. Sibley, from Worcester County, Massachusetts, formed a general machine
repairing business with machinist,John R. Mills, and a pattern -maker, George 0.
Fare, 1;i the early 1870's. They searched for opportunities in the Midwest and
ecided to establish a firm in South Bend.
In 1874, the firm of Sibley, Mills & Ware was established in a building on the
Jest Race, near Washington Street. They later moved to the former Bissell machine
shops on the riverfront. In 1878, the company began producing drill presses, for
whi:.n they are most known. In 1883, the shops were destroyed by fire, so the site
betwe3n E. Tutt and Sample was purchased, and buildings began to spring up.
The two two-story facades along__East Tutt Street date from. about 1890, and served
as a machine and pulley shop and a blacksmith shop:, Circa 1900 foundry opera-
tions began in a new building on Eckmann Street. Drill presses were manufactured
under patents granted to. A. P. Sibley. In 1904, Sibley Machine Tool Company was
incorporated and international sales -began. Sibley purchased the entire business.
Mr. Sibley died in 1907, and, in 191.2, William Holland, fhe manager and president,
purchased control of the company. When.he died in 1922, his son-in-law, Bernard
J. Voll, became president.
Auto, parts castings for General Motors, defense production, machine tools and parts
for one of it.s best customers, such as South Bend Lathe, drilling and grinding
machines were produced by the company. In January, 1968, the production of Sibley
drills was phased out.. The company now makes automotive parts, construction equip-
ment and equipment for the fluid power industries.
