The February 12, 1990 meeting of the Public Safety Committee
was called to order at 4:40 p.m. in the Council informal
meeting room by its Vice Chair Person Council Member Ann
Puzzello.
Persons in attendance included Council Members: Duda,
Niezgodski, Puzzello, Luecke, Voorde, Zakrzewski, Coleman,
and Slavinskas; John Leszczynski, Katie Humphreys, Luther
Taylor, Rick Switalski, Don Porter, and Kathleen Cekanski-
Farrand.
It was noted that the Clerk's Office has received a
telephone call that the Chair Person Council Member William
Soderberg was taken to the hospital and was being admitted
for an illness.
Council Member Puzzello noted that the purpose of the
meeting was to discuss Bill No. 1-90 which would appropriate
the sum of $254, 385. 00 from the Emergency Medical Services
Capital Improvement Fund to defray various fire department
expenses. Chief Luther Taylor stated that the City has
decided to combine various lease purchase payments and that
the proposed appropriate broke down as follows:

Total Appropriation: $254, 385. 00
Chief Taylor credited Council Member Niezgodski for his
recommendation that all heart monitors be consistent thus
the third heart monitor was being recommended.
Following favorable discussion, Council Member Slavinskas
made a motion seconded by Council Member Duda that Bill No.
1-90 be recommended favorably to Council. The motion
passed.
Katie Humphreys noted that only one payment on the Quint-
Midi was being recommended at this time so that the City
could monitor the balance in the Capital Improvement Fund.
She noted that there are a number of other needs which are
currently being weighed by the Department.

Chief Taylor and Rick Switalski then briefly gave an update
on the Neo-natal Unit. It was noted that the City took over
this operation from Memorial Hospital on September 15, 1989.
From that date through the present the City has had 49 runs
with a total of $27, 635. 00 being billed. $9, 000. 00 in
revenue has been received to date. The City's share into
the program is $3,500. 00 plus manpower. It was noted that
the Neo-natal Unit travels all over with the City of South
Bend logo on the Unit and the City has received very
favorable comments from this service from such Cities as
Logansport and Winamac.
There being no further business to come before the
Committee. The meeting was adjourned at 4 :50 p.m.
