PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE

The July 25, 1988 meeting of the Public Safety Committee was
called to order by Councilman Don Niezgodski, Vice Chairman,
at 3:35 p.m. in the Council informal meeting room.
Persons in attendance included Councilmen: Puzzello,
Luecke, Niezgodski, Duda, Slavinskas, Zakrzewski, Voorde,
and Coleman; Max Moore, Members of the News Media, Chief
Luther Taylor, Dan Mirocha, and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand.
Councilman Niezgodski noted that the first item on the
agenda was to review Bill No. 56-88 which requests the
transfer of monies from the Fire Department Account to the
Emergency Medical Services Account.
Luther Taylor, Fire Chief, stated that the transference of
$43,700. 00 was to meet the ambulance expansion for the rest
of this calendar year. A third ambulance would be added
with it to be delivered in mid-August.
Following discussion, Councilman Duda made a motion seconded
by Councilman Puzzello that Bill No. 56-88 be recommended
favorably to Council. The motion passed.
Councilman Niezgodski then stated that the next Bill to
review was Bill No. 57-88 which would appropriate $63 ,635.80
from the Emergency Medical Services Capital Improvement
Fund.
Chief Taylor noted that this was the final payment on the
1984 Pirsch 110 foot skytop aerial. He noted that this was
the "dead quint" and would be used as a reserve unit, thus
making it available for residential use only. It is
currently housed in Station 10. The Chief stated that he
does not believe it is worth repairing since the repair
would take between 6 to 8 months. He further noted that the
company went out of business when it filed bankruptcy. All
of the legal matters are currently being handled by Tom
Bodnar of the Legal Department.
In response to a question from Councilman Niezgodski, the
Chief added that they would no longer do business with this
company. Chief Taylor noted that Pierce of Appleton
Wisconsin has an excellent service record with the City. In
response to a question from Councilman Luecke, it was noted
that the manufacturer looks for money within 30 days of
delivery of a unit.
Councilman Voorde noted that the capital in this account
comes from revenues received through the ambulance service.
• Dan Mirocha noted that currently 54% of the fees go to the
General Fund and 46% of the fees go to the Capital
Improvement Fund.
Following further discussion Councilman Puzzello made a
motion seconded by Councilman Coleman that Bill No. 57-88 be
recommended favorably to Council. The motion passed.
There being no further business to come before the
Committee, the meeting was adjournded at 3:50 p.m.
