Frederick Rufus Cowles settled near Sodus, Michigan with his brother and started
a sawmill. A third brother had settled on Section 13 - Clay Township. In 1873,
Frederick Cowles came to St. Joseph County and his brother went to Michigan.
Frederick had just married his second wife, Elizabeth Kinkaid Leake.
Although there was already a house on the property, Frederick decided to build
a new one to replace it. He had the wood sawn at his brother's mill and hauled
to Clay Township. The house was finished aroudn 1875.
Frederick Rufus Cowles dies May 17, 1878. Elizabeth Kincaid Cowles died March 30,
1914. The property is owned today by Wayne and Dean Plank who are their great
-grandchildren.
