Section 17 Township 38 Range 4E historical notes The oldest portion of this house was built around 1847, while the property was owned by Jacob Smith who later moved to Cass County, Michigan. The main portion was built before 1875, while the property was owned by Michael Smith, who purchased it in 1851 (he may have been a relative of Jacob). Michael Smith came to St. Joseph County from Starke County, Ohio in 1842. He was born in Germany in 1824 and came to this country at the age of two. The property was pictured in the 1875 Atlas and was called "The Pines". Michael Smith owned and farmed the 360 surrounding acres until the 1890's when the property was broken up and sold. The house and 80 acres surrounding were sold in 1906 to E. Louis Kuhns and Ida Studebaker Kuhns. (She was the daughter of Jacob Studebaker.) They sold the house and the land in 1910 to Charles Arthur Carlisle and Anne Stude- baker Carlisle. (She was the daughter of Clement Studebaker).
