Young Scrapbook: Northern Indiana Historical Society Museum: Book D Page 26 Obituary: Ivar Henning historical notes On July 6, 1976 to July 16, 1976 an existing two-story, English Tudor frame house, built in 1925, was moved from 2419 East Jefferson Boulevard to 1608 Devon Circle. The 1932 assessment card gave this house a G-1 rating which is the highest grade of construction known in the City of South Bend built strictly from architectural draw- ings and built by a distinguished contractor. The material used was the highest grade, weather resistant and exceptionally long lasting. Andrew C. Weisburg, owner and manager of the Oliver Hotel Corporation, purchased Lots 19, 20, and 21 in the Jefferson Heights Addition on December 22, 1924. This addition was replatted and became known as Tuxedo Park Lots 4, 5 and 6. A $20,000 restriction was placed on cost of housing on Tuxedo Park property. Ernest W. Young, an architect who had designed many private homes and commercial buildings in South Bend since his arrival in 1904, designed this English Tudor styled home for Andrew C. Weisburg and his wife, Babette, in 1925. The English Tudor style was rather unique for Young, as most of his work was reminiscent of the architect- ural style of Frank Lloyd Wright. By the time the 1926 Directory was published, the Weisburgs were listed as living in this house. In 1935, Ivar Hennings, president of South Bend Bait Company, purchased the house and assumed a mortgage which originally had been $25,000, but had been reduced to $13,000. Ivar Henning died November 11, 1950. His widow, Helen, sold Lots 4, 5, and 6 Tuxedo Park on April 20, 1954 to the South Bend Osteopathic Hospital, Inc. The house was then used by staff workers of the newly con- structed Osteopathic Hospital located on this property. In 1975-76, the Osteopa�hic Hospital began an expansion program. The Tudor house was in the way of construction and the house was sold for $1,800. to Thomas George Podell, a young bricklayer and sub -contractor. Podell,"the owner of the house had purchased the lot on Devon Circle in the normal way. He obtained the proper city permit to move the structure, gave the house the required termite treatment... and posted a performance bond to bring the house up to standard state of repair after it was placed on its new site." - South Bend Tribune - July 16, 1976. The court upheld Podell's right to move this house against a law suit by Devon Circle neighbors.
