Gavin Ferlic, Vice-Chairperson, Community&Economic Development, chaired this
afternoon's committee meeting in Chairperson Henry Davis, Jr.'s absence. A quorum
was present.
There were four agenda items and they were all requests for tax abatement. In each case
Kathy Hahn from the Community Investment Department began each bill hearing with a
report outlining the qualifying criteria met by the abatement applicants,the dollar amount
of new taxes abated and the new dollar amount paid.
Andrew Nemeth representing the applicant, East Bank Learning Center(EBLC),made
the presentation to the committee. EBLC intends to purchase one of the former Madison
Center buildings to enhance and expand their day care capability not only for pre-
schoolers;but also infants. It was stated by Mr. Nemeth that the increase in enrollment
would go from 100 to 150. Mrs. Leslie Kleppe principal of EBLC added information and
answered questions. During the public portion Tricia Deal lauded the developmental
learning her own son had received when he was there. Bill No. 12-89 (Attachment filed
in the Office of the City Clerk.) Ultimately Karen White and Dr. Ferlic registered
motions supported by all that the bill be sent to Council favorably.
The next item Bill No. 12-90 was an abatement petition filed by S. B. Woodworks. Mr.
Michael Lindbergh, owner of the firm made the presentation after Kathy Hahn's
favorable report. Mr. Lindbergh said he had purchased two properties on S. Scott which
intends to renovate to produce wooden children's toys and alumni type memorabilia.
After brief discussion Karen White motioned the bill e sent favorably. Dr. Fred Ferlic
seconded and all affirmed.
Bill No. 12-91, a petition for abatement filed by Curtis Products was next. A local
growing manufacturing facility plans to expand explained their representative Jeff
McGowan and company President Dave Heckaman. The abatement would allow Curtis
to buy additional manufacturing equipment.
Again following brief discussions motions to send to full Council favorably won
unanimous support. This time Dr. Fred Ferlic motioned first and Karen White seconded
before Gavin called for the vote.
The last bill,Bill No. 12-92, also an abatement request to allow the purchase of new CNC
manufacturing equipment for Triangle Machine was heard. Kathy Hahn again reported
favorably, all criteria for abatement having been met. The brief presentation was made
by the owner Mia Tran. There was brief discussion before Karen White moved the bill
be sent to Council favorably. Dr. Fred Ferlic seconded and all approved.
Under miscellaneous Oliver Davis asked for a 2012 year end summary of abatements
granted by the Council detailing the number of new or retained jobs and the dollar
amount of new taxes generated.
There being no further business to come before the committee at this time, Vice-
Chairperson, Gavin Ferlic adjourned the meeting at 4:59 p.m.
