"2013 Council Committee Assignments and Call for Volunteers to Serve"
The South Bend Common Council officers: Karen L. White, Chairperson of the Committee of the Whole;
Oliver J. Davis, Council Vice-President, and Derek D. Dieter, Council President, who were re-elected to
these positions Monday evening are committed to work closely with all members of the Council..They
hope to collaborate with the City Administration in order to implement"best practices" so that policies
and procedures are innovative and become a catalyst to promote the best interest of the City of South
Bend.
President Dieter is challenging each of Committee Chairpersons to work with their Committees to set
goals, objectives and methodologies for tracking success, as well as suggested plans for improvement.
In the interest of furthering these objectives, he announced the following Council Members who will
chair each of the committees. The appointments are as follows:
Community&Economic Development Committee: Council Member at Large Gavin Ferlic,will serve as
Chairperson of the soon to be re-named Community Investment Committee,with Henry Davis,Jr.
being the Vice-Chairperson and Council Members Val Schey and Dr. Fred Ferlic serving as members.
Community Relations: 6th District Council Member Oliver J. Davis will head up the Community
Relations Committee. Council Member Tim Scott, will be the Vice-Chairperson, and Council Members
Val Schey and Dr. David Varner being Committee Members.
Council Rules: The Committee Member will remain the same as last year—President Dieter as
Chairperson, Dr. David Varner as Vice-Chairperson and Council Members Dr. Fred Ferlic and Karen L.
White as members.
Health and Public Safety Committee: Council Member at Large Karen L.White will chair this very busy
committee. Dr. Fred Ferlic will serve as Vice-Chairperson and Council Members Dr. David Varner and
Tim Scott will serve as Committee Members.
Information and Technology: 1't District Council Member Tim Scott will head this committee, in light of
his"tech-savvy" abilities. Dr. Dave Varner will be the Vice-Chairperson, with Council Members Gavin
Ferlic and Henry Davis,Jr. continuing to serve on this Committee.
Parks, Recreation, Cultural Arts&Entertainment: 2nd District Council Member Henry Davis,Jr.will
take over the leadership of this Committee,with Dr. Fred Ferlic as Vice-Chairperson and Council
Members Gavin Ferlic and Tim Scott serving as Committee Members.
Personnel and Finance Committee: 51h District Council Member Dr. David Varner who is now the
longest serving member on the City Council will head up this critical committee which oversees policies
and procedures over city funding, reviews proposed appropriations, and most importantly meticulously
reviews all city budget proposals and salary proposals. Joining Dr. Dave will be Karen L White who will
serve as Vice-Chairperson and Council Members Val Schey and Henry Davis,Jr.
Public Works and Property Vacation Committee: 6th District Council Member Oliver J. Davis will take
over as Chairperson, with Valerie Schey serving as Vice-Chairperson and Council Members Dr. David
Varner and Gavin Ferlic continuing to serve on the Committee.
Residential Neighborhood Committee: 15t District Council Member Tim Scott will continue to serve as
Chairperson of this committee; with Council Member at Large Karen L.White being the Vice-
Chairperson and Dr. Fred Ferlic and Oliver Davis being Committee Members.
Utilities Committee: 3rd District Council Member Valerie Schey has been tapped to head the Utilities
Committee. Joining her will be Oliver Davis, as Vice-Chairperson, and Council Members Henry Davis Jr.
and Karen L.White serving on the committee.
Zoning and Annexation Committee: 4th District Council Member Dr. Fred Ferlic will Chair this very
active committee, with Henry Davis Jr.serving as Council Vice-President, and joining them will be
Council Members Oliver J. Davis and Gavin Ferlic.
The Council will need dedicated city residents to work with the Council Members, and the Council
Committees. At next Mondays Common Council Meeting, we will formally announce that citizen
volunteers may begin to apply for consideration to sit on a Council Committee.
Applications may be found on the city's website, in the Office of the City Clerk or from any of the nine
(9) Council Members. All applications should be filed no later than Thursday January 31 2013a They
will then be referred to the Council Committee Chairpersons who will make the final selection. Last year
a record number of residents applied, and we hope this interest to become involved will continue this
year.
2013 will be another challenging year for our City. With the help, input and support of the residents of
South Bend, 1013 can become a GREAT year which focuses our efforts on quality job creation, economic
development, improved city services and keeping our budgets balanced.
