Elder Jacob Miller (1812-September 24, 1871) was a leader of the Dunkard Church associated with the German community of the northern end of Portage Prairie in German Township, along with his brother, James Miller. By 1875, George A. Ullery (who lived from January 18, 1846 to February 6, 1929) had purchased 60 acres comprising the western edge of the previous Miller farm. A farmstead is shown on the 1875 Plat Map at this time. The property is still owned by George A. Ullery in 1895 and 1911, per plat maps. George A. Ullery married Mary Jane Miller Ullery (1845-1908) in 1866. A son, Charles S. Ullery (1869-1923) married Mary “Emma” Early Ullery in 1889. When George A. Ullery died in 1929, ownership of the farm passed to an “Emma Ullery,” who is shown to have owned the property in the 1929 and 1936 plat maps. The 1958 Plat Map shows John Berry as the owner. The county retains aerial imagery for this property. Imagery associated with this property is included in this packet for the years 1938, 1951, 1957, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1987, 1998, 2008, 2019, and 2021. These images show the evolution of the farmstead from 1938 to the present. Based upon the plat maps and aerial imagery, Staff believe this homestead to have been built on the site of the original George A. Ullery farmstead. The farm has evolved significantly over the last hundred and fifty years, and none of the buildings visible on the property are believed to date to his ownership. Staff is unable to determine the specific age of the extant barns, but estimate their age to the 1930s, at the earliest. A third barn previously stood to the west of the primary structure of interest; this barn was torn down prior to 1998. The age of the house is unknown. Based upon the above information, this property is an example of a heavily modified farmstead of the middle and later 20th century. Page | 5 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION This is a rural property in German Township consisting of three structures: two barns and a residential dwelling with attached garage. The site is approximately 11.8 acres including open grassy area, homestead, and enclosed pastures. The northern half of the parcel is open an open grassy field. The driveway runs along the eastern edge of the parcel to the homestead, which is the middle of the parcel on the eastern half. To the west and south of the farmstead are pastures enclosed with wooden and wire fences. Primary structure of interest is a barn, approximately 40’ L x 30’ W x 30’ H, constructed with laminated beams and covered in wooden lap siding. Shed roof porches with railing and detailed woodwork have been added to either end. Roof is gothic-arched with protruding ‘peak’ over east covered entrance. Six window openings (with six divided lights) are on both the north and south ground level facades. The east façade has larger sliding doors that have mocked smaller entrance doors. Two additional windows flank the entrance opening on the ground level. Two more windows are hidden beneath the shed roof overhang. The shed roof posts have brackets and simplified spandrels, with simple wooden railings on the north and east sides enclosing a concrete and dirt floor. Two more windows and a hayloft entrance are on the upper level of the east façade. Three cutouts are added as decoration: a rearing horse under the roof eave, and a cowboy and cowgirl on the east side entrance doors. The west façade is similar but has smaller doors that slide on the inside of the opening. The western façade’s shed roof is lower to the ground and has a shallower slope, letting the two medium-height windows to be visible above the shed roof. Assessor information lists this structure as having been built in 1948. Historic aerial photographs indicate that the structure may predate the assessor information. Secondary barn is approximately 40’ L x 30’ W’ x 18’ H with overhanging gabled asphalt shingled roof. The north and south façades have two groupings of 3 six-paned windows. Large, full-floor height sliding doors are on the east façade. The main house is a heavily modified and added-on-to structure facing perpendicular Adams Road on a cement foundation with attached two-car garage. It is an irregular plan structure with multiple additions. An above ground pool encompassed by a wooden deck with lattice work sits to the southwest. The house faces east, towards the access driveway. Page | 6 RECOMMENDATION Landmarks are to be reviewed based upon the following criteria: (1) historic and cultural value, (2) educational value, (3) suitability for preservation. (1) Historic and cultural value –the property is associated with two early settler families in the German Township area (Miller and Ullery). No structures associated with either of those families remain. The remaining structures date to the early twentieth century but have been modified. (2) Educational value – the laminated barn’s construction is interesting, but not exclusively unique. (3) Suitability for preservation – the agricultural heritage of German Township, and the structures associated with it, should be preserved when possible. The property owner has kept the barn structure in good condition. Based upon the heavily modified condition of the farmstead, staff do not recommend this property for landmark designation. South Bend, IN 46628 Legal Description: The barn size is approximately 30x40. Laminated beams, The barn can stand without any support. Built in the early 40's Reason for Local Historic Landmark designation: There are very few barns built like this with laminated beams. The reason one of the neighbors bought their home in the neighborhood behind the barn was because of the barn's beauty and structure. Their five-year-old son wanted to look out the window and see the barn. The county councilman and engineer remarked on the barn's beauty and that nothing should interfere with its beauty. Historical and cultural significance: There aren't any barns in this area like this. Educational value: School teachers have brought their school children out to see the barn and be exposed to the horses. Reigns of Life came out one time. My wife made sloppy joes for all the children. One child stayed behind to help with the saddle. He begged to have another ride. All the children saw him getting another ride so they all stood in line again. Every kid rode another time even though they could have had dinner right away. They loved it. Suitability for preservation: Everyone who comes to see the property remarks on how beautiful the barn is and how it should never come down. Describe any noteworthy architectural/landscape features: The beams are an architectural work of art. Also, the placement of the barn is on a piece of land that is so beautiful. The land beyond the barn is unfettered with wires or any structures which adds to its beauty. It would be a real shame to add poles or wires to the scenery.
